Re: Possible Changes to Recruiting Rules

Darn! My newborn granddaughter can't commit until she's 16. That stinks!!

With the death of the gentlemen's agreement, commitments don't mean a heck of a lot anyway.

I don't think unofficial visits should have to wait until their junior year, if official visits won't be allowed until then, either. Or are unofficial visits really just "wink wink" unofficial, and the NCAA is trying to curb that?

Can’t see this happening. If anything I’m hearing D3 schools are feeling the pressure to commit earlier as well.

No one expected US Lacrosse to pass recruiting restrictions last year either. But they did

What problem(s) is/are these rule changes supposed to be fixing? If a kid wants to commit in 8th grade and the coach wants to take the risk of a talent plateau, go for it. In fact, I say let them sign a letter of intent at that point. That would greatly reduce amount of wasted time in recruiting chasing after all the verbals until they actually sign.

If you are naïve enough to believe they are going to be STUDENT-athletes (funny they don’t call them Athlete-students ) then making them wait would seem to be a good thing, they will have somewhat of an idea what they want to do with their life, especially in the case of the girls who unless they become coaches, are on the US Olympic Team, or go to Europe they have no shot of earning enough money to support themselves, at least right now. Even for the boys it’s a long shot, although the money involved at least maybe makes it worth the gamble.

When I read the article it said it was for D1 only, obviously it needs more work or it creates at least as many problems as it solves.

You can pick a college without declaring your major. A large school like UW has just about any major a young lady would like. I do know some kids who were freshmen in HS who knew where they wanted to go to school and what their major was going to be. They worked hard enough at their studies to ensure their grades were good enough to get in where they wanted to go. It's not the norm, but it does happen.

I still want to know what problem this solves.

If it solves the problem of eliminating early recruiting tournaments & money grab companies like Selects & Rush then it’s a good thing!!

Totally agree! Selects and Rush feed on the dreams of players (and their families) that hope to play in college someday. Would absolutely love to see those types of companies be put out of business for good!

On the other end of the recruiting conversation, UMD just signed a goalie who will turn 21 her freshman year from Sweden. Is this a new idea or old idea giving U.S. Division 1 NCAA scholarships to Europeans who play in what they describe as a professional league (a league where some college graduates from the US play)? This presumably is like junior men in US where they are able to retain NCAA eligibility? Does this happen in Division 3 too?

apparently they are taking a page out of the previous coaches book of tricks
they are not the only ones, Clarkson seems to be doing it
if you want to win, some coaches will do anything, can't really blame the coaches, their continued 6 figure salary depends upon it
the NCAA & university administration is to blame, they pizz all over the concept of Student-Athlete with a straight face, it's all about the money
can't blame the players, if somebody dangles free room and board, a chance to delay being an adult for another 4 years, and a chance for a free degree from a US university, why not?

keep in mind the Olympics used to be amateur athletes only
maybe we should expect that some day down at the squirt level we'll see recruiting like in college
parents given a rental car to use if their kid plays for the team
not sure supplying hookers at that age will have an effect though unless the hooker likes to play video games

Recruiting changes have been approved and go into effect "starting with the next school year":

Division I Council adopts recruiting legislation
