The question becomes:
Payment to the attorneys for ... what. If it fits the US FEC's criteria, is there a problem?

Paying Don Jr's fees, that is illegal as it does not meet what the FEC looks for, namely, "legal bills arising from being a candidate or elected official." That should be straight-forward to determine.
