Behind home plate there were quite a few empty seats
    Or a late-arriving crowd.

More off days means an earlier start to the season. I guess if they had 4 more, it would have been last monday.

I have the same question. Twins have their home opener next week on a GD thursday as well.

I canít remember Opening Day ever being on a weekend.

But I do remember the Reds always having the honor of being the first game.

Interestingly, the twins and Red Sox had a tradition of being the first spring training game. Maybe they still do.

I had no idea of this at all! Is there a story behind it or did it just kinda happen? Did it go back to the Senators? Did they share a facility the way the Mets and Cardinals used to?

I have absolutely no idea the history behind it. I'm guessing it had something to do with the proximity of their Spring Training HQs.

And a quick google search seems to indicate this is no longer the case and hasn't been for some time. Maybe it was just apocryphal.
