  • Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Good news: It appears that each of the Gopher/Badger games will be streamed on both BTN Plus and FloHockey.com.
Bad news: Both services require a paid subscription.
(I'm feeling really good about my decision to purchase the annual subscription from FloHockey. )

As with all of these streaming services, the quality of the video feed is based on the equipment at the location. Some schools have better equipment (and operators) than others.

So true. Also in some games you don't get any play-by-play audio, which in some cases can be a good thing.
But in general I've been pleased with the video quality. Compared to just a few years ago it's much improved as it's now almost exclusively broadcast in HD. But as DDad16 notes there are still varying degrees of what can loosely be defined as "HD". As you might expect this becomes most noticeable when you connect to a big screen TV.

I understand that black jerseys can also have an impact on the quality of the broadcast!

Time to move on from the jersey talk to the upcoming big "Border Battle" series this coming weekend.

Interesting take on what to expect from Nicole Haase and Candace Horgan in this week's "Wednesday Women": https://www.uscho.com/2018/10/24/wednesday-women-6/

              ...starting with Nicole's observation...

Nicole: "I think you have to give the Badgers the advantage at home, just because they’ve been so successful at LaBahn. Both games are already sold out and will be the 18th and 19th straight sell out for the Badgers, who are riding a 35-game home unbeaten streak. As you said, the Gophers can’t be happy with having lost to their rivals five times last season, especially since Wisconsin ended their season."

The Gophers should have plenty of motivation to reverse the recent trend at LaBahn...I believe the talent is there to do it.

In general, all the talk of unbeaten streaks that go past the current season or what happened in past years are just wasted ink, like that above and T3 crying about the BC losing streak of 4 last year to this year. Every year is a new year, turnover is ceaseless and because of that every year has all sorts of new twists that were unseen. UW is a great team, the rodents are a great team, it's going to be a great series.

The Gophers appear to have the potential to be a great team. I haven't seen more than hints of greatness from them yet this year. They struggle to just be good at times. In recent years, the Badgers have been much quicker to find a consistent game at the start of the season, and they have the regular-season banners to prove it.

Scored 4 pp goals ... Given up 5 pp goals for a -1 differential on special teams. When have the Gophers had that?
The supposed 1st line...The "Pots and Pan" line doesn't even have a point-per-game scorer.
Goaltending isn't as feast or famine as it was last year but I think Scobee would like to have a mulligan on the Saturday OhioSS game.
At the outset, we could hang with the dude...

or at least have a defender near the net to help her out
that was the difference in the game, whenever there was a Gopher near the The OSU net, there was at least one Buckeye, whenever there was a scrum there were as many Buckeyes as Gophers
they really left Scobee hanging out to dry on that one

Ask people what sets humans atop the food chain and some will say the use of tools (no), a bigger brain (nope), a symbolic language (no) … what really puts us on top of the food chain is the ability to adapt to any environment (which also calls into question how and why humans would evolve, but that’s another story). The same is true of a hockey game.

When something isn’t working you have to do something else. “When the going gets tough the tough get going” is often the mantra of many, … skate harder, skate faster, shoot harder, .. doing the same thing just a little harder or faster likely isn’t going to achieve different results, the opposition can do the same. Rather than turning it up a notch, throwing a curve ball will force the opposition out of their game.

You’d think a team that skates four lines would be better on the second game of the weekend but that hasn’t happened against UMD & The OSU. Part of that was the goalies playing better, but the opposing teams themselves played better (and different) the second night. On Friday as the game played out The OSU was getting manhandled, basically reacting to the Gophers. Perhaps based on last year they thought they could play an offensive game but it didn’t work.

On Saturday rather than chasing they were putting pressure on them, in all three zones. It was this pressure that was the difference in the two games. When you have more time it is easier to pass and shoot but when rushed you are going to make bad passes (and bad decisions) and shoot wide or right into the goalies pads. As the game went on the tide did turn, but was too little too late. A puck that hits the pipe counts the same as one that misses by 5 feet or is smothered in the goalies pads. The two game weekend format tends to favor the team that can change and adapt as the weekend goes on.

Has anyone heard anything about Taylor Wente's availability for this weekend's games? It sure would be nice to have the Zumwinkle-Wente-Schammel line reunited.

Have heard nothing official, but a couple of people near me were talking about her being out anywhere from a couple of weeks to months. Not sure what illness they were discussing. Maybe mono?

Gophers and Badgers scoreless after one. SOG are 10-10.

According to Dan it sounds like a quick whistle with the puck still loose in the Gopher crease might have helped keep the game scoreless in the 1st period. The Gophers haven't had much puck luck lately, but at least their quick whistle luck has been good so far.
