    Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2018 Off-Season

I did not know you could cut a someone from the team other than for certain things such as academic reasons etc. How will this affect scholarship distribution i.e. if you cut do they loose their scholarship or does it go into a pool to be offered to the incoming class. My fear about this is that we may have a good or great incoming class but will we now have a cycle where every 4 years we have a mass exodus of 12 players as they graduate.

It'll even out over time, whether due to redshirt injury, signing a professional contract, or other form of attrition. Scholarship's up to the school, but remember that the NLI (which governs receipt of an athletic scholarship) is a one-year contract.

We lost 12 or 13 back in 2013 and managed to be ok for a few years. It's not how many you lose, it's the quality of those coming in that matters most. Turnover is part of the college game.

Trust me they need to clear out some of the players they have on the roster currently. They just really can't play. While this is still NCAA hockey at times you have to run this as a business because hockey is a money making sport at Quinnipiac and these cuts are a business decision.

I'm not arguing that at all. Just pointing out we've been down this road before. As long as we've got decent recruits ready, the number lost doesn't matter.

What they are bringing in trumps what they are losing by a wide margin.

You also have to clear out kids that didn't buy into the culture. It seemed at times like there was very little buy in last year. Here's the deal: If you don't want to play here, no one's forcing you to.

That's good to hear. Rand's been at QU long enough that I trust him and his staff to bring in kids that will be ready to help lead us back to where we want to be.

That was started by getting rid of Aldworth and mick. The recent ones are just players that aren't talented enough to play at the D1 level.

QUAlum, excuse my ignorance on the subject, comparing the way Yale only brings in the bare minimum of recruits needed and the way many of the Hockey East teams stockpile recruits. Is the difference caused by Ivy League rules? Or is it variable from team to team? I would assume that admissions difficulty may hamstring the talent pool for Ivies as well. I am no recruiting expert and thought you might know the reason(s), thanks.

I wouldn't say its the Ivy League rules at all. varies from team to team. Harvard stockpiles recruits knowingly that some of them aren't going to get into Harvard aka Bode Wilde and Oliver Wahlstrom. None of the other Ivies do what Harvard is doing.

This has caught my attention! Mind you, this is from the outside looking in and a high-level view...this situation does not sound or optically look good. You mean to tell me you would cut loose these players that in your words "can't play" after your staff recruited these guys; it's not like there was a coaching change. If that's the case culpability certainly lies with the scouting staff recruiters and some extent the players as they didn't pan out. This can only hurt future recruiting efforts with a credibility issue as now a prospect recruit can imagine that this can happen to them. While the education aspect is a whole other subject.

McMaster continues to impress, a goal and an assist in Utica's 5-2 victory over Toronto last night. Four points in four games in the playoffs, he's becoming a star.
It all starts with the goaltending.

It won't hurt recruiting at all. Quinnipiac honored the commitments to these players to come in as freshman when most bigger schools would have dropped them prior to that with how average they were in juniors. You have to remember these are 1 year contracts these players are on and the coaching staff especially at Quinnipiac needs to treat this like a business. When you have your first losing season in 22 years and have missed the NCAA tournament in the past two you just can't sit back and have dead weight on the roster. They whiffed on these guys. Happens to every team and at least I am happy that Quinnipiac is doing something about it.

Fair enough! I am no so sure that it will not impact recruiting slightly. While Q honoring their commitment on a year by year status is honorable, that still does solve the idea about being "cut" or "mutually agreed" to leave where they are now like free agents and looking for a transfer. This would be akin to Q retracting a verbal commitment; word gets out and recruits have that to factor that in, ala Miami of OH and WI years back. Actually in retrospect, a prospect recruit would probably rather have the de-commitment before he enrolls therefore saving face of a failure once he got there. Look, I understand it is a dog eat dog, survival of the fittest world and as you say "hockey business"but to me this falls squarely on the face of the scouts/staff. A possible solution would be to "commit" much later in juniors (I know the pool dries up for which I say there is plenty especially late-developers). With Q having one bad year, it sounds like you are frantic and in panic mode instead of re-assessing and reflecting then taking action...losing the Peca's, Anas, Toews, St. Denis, Clifton bros will do it to you.
