      Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

            HBO ran a GOT marathon prior to the most recent season which iirc is now several months back. I watched EP 1 & 2 of (S5?) and I wanted to tear out my eyeballs and stick hot pokers into my ears. I honestly thought I was watching a bad SNL parody.

              I'm not sure I would ever recommend jumping into a serial like GOT and expect to understand or even appreciate it. I suppose a show should be able to stand on its own, but the storylines are so complex it would be like jumping into The Wire in the middle of S3 and trying to understand the story. You wouldn't know the backstories, you wouldn't have had the character development, you don't know what's going onso you might get frustrated and just quit.

                In a serial show, I'd disagree that individual shows should stand on their own. Some will, perhaps even most, but that shouldn't inherently be a requirement. In order to create episodes that stand alone, the overall narrative takes a backseat to the single episode's specific events. The narrative may have created the setup for a specific episode, and that episode needs to drive forward the narrative, but you have episode 9 from seasons 1-6 as more or less singular events. They need to happen for the narrative, but they may each be the only episodes where you can have an interloping viewer just come in and enjoy the slaughter.

                      It wasn't the story that confounded me - it was just so freaking over-done the acting is sub-par and I thought the story telling was lazy from what I gathered in the little time I watched.
