Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

They've never cared about the butts in the seats before...just the money and those seats are already sold. They say it's travel cost but they royally screwed bracket integrity for this.

Ok, then why did the committee put Kato & Duluth there then?

To all-but-guarantee a local team in St. Paul; to slightly reduce travel expenditures; to beef up attendance in the east.

They're putting the "region" back in "regional." Or, more likely, what cetihcra said about eastern attendance and travel costs.

Either way, it's like they've resurrected the old North Star Cup, minus Minnesota, and with the more colorful of the Serratores. Win-win!

So we got #6 (Mankato) and #12 (UMD) instead of what we should have got in #8 (Michigan) and #9 (Northeastern). First glance, didn't care that much. Closer look, yes, Mankato's RPI is considerably higher than the two #2 band teams behind them. I just can't see this happening to Minnesota, North Dakota, BU or BC if they were #1 overall seeds. Think you could have swapped UMD and Northeastern but Mankato should have went out east to Cornell's bracket.

Maybe the only positives are: we are familiar with both teams if/when we get by Air Force and both of those teams are coming off two losses. They better not look past Air Force.

BTW, was at the tournament this past weekend. Thought the Huskies moved the puck pretty well both nights, especially early on against Denver. Denver took advantage of their opportunities, the Huskies couldn't put them in the back of the net. Wasn't a momentum draining loss at all. Don't take the bad penalties (looked like frustration penalties) and they should be just fine this weekend.

I would love to make it to Sioux Falls, but have too much else being planned into my life by other parties at the moment.

Bob Motzko was 16-17-3 against Don Lucia for what it's worth.

I hope the players still left from this team 2 years ago that blew it against Ferris State remember what happened because this matchup against Air Force is eerily similar. Schudlt missed a hip check right after the center ice faceoff in OT and the entire play broke down after that, resulting in basically a wide open net rebound goal. Experience is a great motivator. Don't take anyone for granted, especially as a 1 vs 16. Mankato fans will tell you the same after their debacle against RIT.

Getting up early will be huge. AF is 13-0-1 when leading after 2 but 0-9-1 when trailing after two. SCSU is 16-1-1 when leading after 2.

We can't be down 0-2 after one like we were against Miami twice...

They remember it. They have talked about it multiple times. Judd Peterson specifically. If they lose it won't be because they underestimated Air Force.

Wish like hell I could be there but should be a great weekend of hockey. Hoping to see Benson and Winiecki both in the lineup for TWO games this weekend. Ferris State is weighing heavily on the mind and hope we don't see anything like that again. Am a little nervous about Jaycox and Hrenak but both have played big minutes this season and Hrenak at the World Juniors. Should be a great regional and am hoping the boys will be in St Paul in a couple of weeks! GO HUSKIES WOOOOOOOOOOO

Lately it seems like its been Winiecki or Benson has been the healthy scratch which says a lot about the depth this lineup has because they are both pretty good players. Newell was out for a few weeks there too with an injury so he was the odd man out but he was placed back on the line with Eyssimont/Lizotte and they looked really good last weekend. Just my opinion but I think Benson is a better offensive threat than Winiecki and should be in there.

If we didn't have to play them this weekend, I'd be pulling for Air Force. From a Pioneer Press article quoting Serratore:

“There are three things I’ve never seen in my life,” the Coleraine, Minn., native said. “I’ve never seen Bigfoot, I’ve never seen the Easter bunny, and I’ve never seen a referee say he had a crap game. I have seen Santa Claus, actually met him in a bar in San Francisco, me and my brother Tony. Good dude, Santa. Likes his pops.”

“I’m not into conspiracy theories, but what’s with this Minnesota bracket of death?” Serratore joked. “It’s pretty obvious to me. They put the three Minnesota teams in with Air Force (and with) the Frozen Four in St. Paul, it’s pretty obvious to me that they are doing everything in their power to make sure a Minnesota team doesn’t make it (to St. Paul).”

Go Huskies. I'm calling a 3-1 win and we'll see Mankato Saturday night.

Air Force up 1-0. SCSU not looking all that good so far

                              Make that 2-0!
