Tipsy, you make a good point. I'll leave it at that. Blessings on SCSU's search, btw.

I think Hastings would be weighing a similar salary at SCSU, and so the factors I see are this: his sophomore son in HS and his freshman daughter on the softball team at MSU, and his long contract and chance to be the top dog in the league every year, vs. the NCHC and what that can do for recruiting and competing in the NCAA Tournament — where does he feel he has the best chance to win a title in the next 5 years? I don’t know how big the alum factor is.
So everyone having to fly to ASU is better? And traveling to Mankato for the schools you listed above is any better than going to BSU? So is ASU going to subsidize travel for the NCHC schools? Because they shot down the WCHA for the very reason of not wanting to do that. Adding ASU if they don't pay subsidies does not increase league revenue so even with a new arena, what is the appeal? Even with, what is the appeal? Sounds like a bad idea all around, other than making a winter escape to Arizona an opportunity. I like it for me, but makes no sense for the league.

On the coaching part, we'll see how much the family piece weighs. Motzko's oldest son is a sophomore at St Cloud Cathedral and a pretty good hockey player (surprise) and yet he took another job. Will also see how patient Hastings is waiting to get into the NCHC. Honestly, I don't think being in the WCHA is all that bad for Mankato. They can dominate the league and still do well out of conference and make the tourney. I know it hasn't worked every year but I'd say the odds are close to the same because being a top 4 team in the NCHC (usually gets you in the NCAA's) is no easy task.

This Motzko press conference is vomit inducing.

He was asked why he would leave St. Cloud and he is acting like at the back of his mind, he always wanted to coach at the U of M, but never thought it would be a possibility.

So either he is full of crap, or is telling the truth and should never be allowed back into the HBNHC without being lustily booed.

Yeah, you guys deserve someone who truly loves SCSU and wants to be there and to turn it into the top team in the state. I hope he's telling the truth because I'd hate for a Gopher coach to be here just for the money and to be full of crap. Depending on how things go, I might be booing him right along with all of you, lol.

ASU has the gigantic alumni base and the warm weather, so if they want to get the conference to 10 teams, that could be possibly the factor — I’m not saying I personally think or know ASU would be a great NCHC addition.

Mankato is very easy for those schools to get to. They take a relatively short flight to MSP, and in 70 minutes are in Mankato, all easy driving. Teams stay adjacent to the rink, and can walk the skywalk into the arena just across the street.

Hastings and the University have been selling this to beef up the non conference as well, which is finally starting to work — BU is coming to town next year — never thought I’d see that.

Yeah, having had to coach against Mack, that kid is **** good. I would argue that, while SCSU is currently better positioned for NCAA Tournament success, this wouldn’t be like Motzko leaving to go to MN — pay would be similar and the resources available aren’t far greater than they are in Mankato.

Regardless, going to be very interesting to see what happens.

Assumed it was gonna happen, but was hoping he would stay. One of the funnest players to watch. The guy could stick-handle like few I have seen come through this program. Also, one of the best clutch performers. The big games, he was scoring. Pretty much single-handedly won the NCHC tournament for us in 2016.

It's probably a mix. He has to cup the balls of the boosters and fanbase. Whether or not he actually buys that bill of goods deep down is another thing.

Doubling his base salary to $2.9 million over five years might have had something to do with it too, but it's not like he's going to mention that in a public setting.

Yeah, it's like something I read on social media: "Bob Motzko did a fantastic job at SCSU, brought the program to the fore in D-I hockey, and is a great guy. But I still hope the gophers lose their next 9,000 games".
