That is my point. Those were not true "showcase" tournaments. Those were league games which mattered. The players I know don't like the true showcase tournaments which are simply tournaments but no one wins/ no playoffs etc. Travel somewhere, play 4-5 games and go home. What is wrong with having a tournament champion? I get that scouts like to see certain matchups and those tournaments will usually try to match up the better teams to play each other. My point is the players generally like to know that there is some final or chance to win. Especially for teams that are not in the upper echelon. They are relegated to playing other weaker teams without a chance to test their mettle against the stronger teams. Yes you end up with a few blowouts along the way but having a winner is nice.

I understand your point. I guess it comes down to what you expect to get out of the showcase.
Beantown is a perfect example: I manage a midget AA team in the Toronto area and tell my parents that the Sunday games are for them and the girls, the scouts don’t really care who wins, they’re gone by Sunday morning.

I am as shocked as you I have watched the Selects play against U16 Ontario West Selects. 0-0 3 periods and overtime. Teams like Ontario West or Stoney Creek or Vancouver all went to OT with Selects. The goalie play was excellent most of the games were even shots or close.

Why do they bother giving out bronze medals when there’s no bronze medal game? Kind of like a participation trophy

They're just like the NCAA which gives out bronze semifinalist trophies to the 2 semi final losers.
