That's the combined total for last year and this year, right?

Maybe since they were discussing the 40th Anniversary of the Beanpot in the Blizzard, they were referring to attendance that night.

The sections of empty seats last Monday were telling. Also the bare-bones coverage on USCHO adn College Hockey News. SBN didn't even bother sending a reporter and decided covering Minnesota girls high school hockey was more compelling. How long before the powers that be stick a fork in this dog and kill it?

Right now, the only way to save the Beanpot is to expand it. After all, there are more than just four college hockey teams in the Boston area.

I did notice the lack of media coverage as well. No live blog anywhere this year.

Why would they ditch the beanpot just because of fewer fans? Still making money off of it.

Like whom, Bentley? Or UMass Boston? Wentworth? Babson? And UM/UML/UNH/PC/UConn aren't in the Boston area. Part of the problem (but not all of it) is that the Boston sports media, both print and electronic, has become obsessed with pro sports to the exclusion of almost everything else. Once upon a time, the Globe had two full-time beat writers (Joe Concannon and Bob Monahan) that covered almost nothing but college sports. And on the tube, guys like Clark Booth and Don Gillis gave college sports their due. No more.

BC football gets a reluctant nod once in awhile but not much else.

All true, but again, we are looking at this tournament in a vacuum. To attribute the drop in attendance to these issues specific to this tournament ignores the reality that attendance is dropping almost everywhere in college hockey. The issues go way deeper and have been discussed comprehensively on multiple threads on this board. Social media, competing entertainment, out of control ticket prices, TV availability (not just for this event but a million games on every night), kids' shorter attention spans and the tendency to not sit and watch sports, fewer kids playing due to high cost of equipment and skating venues. It goes on and on. Expansion is not the answer to everything. In fact, I would speculate that "contraction" might even be helpful in this case. Play at a smaller venue. Increase the demand for tickets and decrease the supply. Make it a "sought after" item. Ratchet up the interest and enthusiasm, which can best be done by improving the atmosphere. That means don't play in a cavernous arena, but in a smaller, more confined area which by default and proximity will generate more excitement. I mean, are the powers that be just going to sit and watch this die or are they going to face reality and DO something to stop the continuous decline? It's baffling how long people wait before they acknowledge a problem and take action to alleviate it.

How often do you see BC and BU with poor records or subpar seasons at the same time? Parking is very expensive as I don’t normally park at the Garden it was $48 last night at the Celtics game. For my elderly mom in a wheelchair I had to park in the Garden garage for convenience and accessibility.

Dropping the ticket prices and price in parking would help. Then you add the fees charged when ordering online is another deterrent if you want to go and take your family and kids.

Next are the food prices and beer is way too high compared to beer at college venues 🍺🍺
