Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Sunday warned that President Donald Trump’s hard-right policy adviser Stephen Miller was preventing legislation that could end the current government shutdown.

On day two of President Trump’s first government shutdown, Graham told reporters that he was hopeful for a Sunday “breakthrough” that could re-open the government.

But he also cautioned that Trump policy adviser Stephen Miller could kill any immigration deal. Graham suspects Miller is responsible for scuttling an earlier deal on so-called Dreamers after Trump had agreed to it.

“Every time we have a proposal, it is only yanked back by staff members. As long as Stephen Miller is in charge of negotiating on immigration, we are going nowhere,” Graham reportedly said.

It's going to be this way as long as the voters don't punish the party that unleashed this insanity. It used to be an article of faith that if a party became too fanatical in its Utopianism the voters would run in terror. It's still what we hear whenever we put forward even a slightly left-of-center idea. But the Republicans have now been a far right extremist party, bordering on a fascist regime, for 23 years, and they control all three branches and are dominant in state legislatures and governorships.

It is time to rethink the assumption that the US is a country of moderates. It may be a country of two hard fringes with nothing in the middle that only wants to think of itself as a nation of moderates because that seems safer and more stable.

Not necessarily. One side is completely hard right but they all turn out and vote. The other side while maybe containing a more diverse set of opinions doesn't show up regularly. Republican voters show up to oppose Democrats winning elections. Dem leaners are perfectly happy to go 3rd party or stay home regardless of the stakes. Until that changes, the inmates will be running the asylum. It helps a bit that the GOP electorate is 99% grumpy old (60-80 years old especially) white people easily manipulated by fear and BS. While with Dems you're dealing with anything from hippies to former Republicans who realize their old party has gone batchit crazy.
