My guess is he's the next ambassador to New Zealand It's harsh to compare Martha Coakley to Roy Moore but the Doug Jones to Scott Brown comparison is a good one.

Meanwhile, Tina Smith is taking Al Franken's seat, and will run for the seat in 2018.

I think 2018 will be an interesting primary process. Though I'm guessing there will be a number of deals made on who's running for what major race in 2018 and 2020. Governor, lt. gov, senate, MN-3, MN-6, state auditor, attorney general.

When Jones has his rhetorical skills and demographic appeal he can certainly entertain the thought of becoming president.

Two differences. Scott Brown is a lot cuter and Doug Jones appears to have a functioning cerebral cortex.

The DNC should create a separate structure devoted to competing in the deep south, and let Jones run it. It would be a sort of Neo-Dixiecrats, except without the racism and thumping. Well, it would even have thumping, just not the insane OT fascist version. There must be a lot of Thumpers in AL with above a third grade reading level and who don't reflexively bow to the teevee Baptists. They were sickened by Moore and they should be sickened by Dump. They would give a Democrat a fair hearing if there was one who could speak to them as kin. A Molly Ivins of the Bible Belt.

That's just it -- I have NO idea how to speak to those people and neither does Bernie or Liz or Nancy or Chuck or Perez or the Snow Muslim. But Doug does; he just proved it.

We need a conveyor belt to turn out deeply liberal but also deeply southern candidates and advisers.

That is their problem not ours. You need to to start worrying about other demographics instead of just White Women.

Appears to be the biggest growth area available to Democrats. I think they should worry about it. They can't grow with African American women. Hispanics and White Women are the two Demographics they could flip and grab the majority.

How much you wanna bet, after Jones is inaugurated (assuming he is), those women drop the cases against Roy Moore within 48 hours?

The GOP is gifting us Hispanics. We should be able to make gains among educated, non-Evangelical whites, both female and male.

We need to be the party of choice among educated, suburban whites throughout the entire country. We are the party that represents the middle class -- we have their backs on economics. And those people vote pocketbook. We should be the default choice of the Bourgeoisie. That means we compromise a lot on guns, to begin with. That's a single issue voter we don't have to exclude. (Genuinely sorry, joe -- women's rights are fundamental, you're on the wrong side of history.)

Most importantly we should push hard for economic justice and reining in the Plutes. That's the single most healthy thing we can do for the middle class.

I'm not so sure on hispanics. There are a lot of generalizations made about them that aren't always based on reality. They come from a lot of different places too.

You're on the right path in your last couple of paragraphs. I might add that the dems should be careful not to be too negative on the country or white people. I think it turns a lot of people off and doesn't offer much in return.

Says the guy who wants the Dems to become Republicans. We'll be sure to give that advice all the weight it's due.

I just want a middle of the road party with decent people running it! It shouldn't be too much to ask for.

I agree with this. The gratuitous "that's the whites" or "that's white men" barbs from white liberals are stupid college sophomore crap and very counter-productive. I actually really enjoy both my whiteness and my maleness, to say nothing of my straightness which I have found quite diverting. I know exactly what the people who voice those barbs are getting at -- I even agree with it. But 95% of the country just fell off the turnip truck and they REALLY think that when you say "Black Lives Matter" you're saying "kill whitey."

The left, particularly the young, loves to talk its own lingo and f-ck the public if they don't get it. Well, no, because ya see the public votes.

And even if, say, you really can't stand somebody, you can still be circumspect. That's why when I debate with Thumpers I'm not actually calling them "Thumpers." Are they? You bet they are. But would addressing them as suh assist me in changing their minds? Nope.

Reagan always closed the door before he laughed at the fundies who came calling on him. Twas ever thus.

Says a guy who has no idea where the middle is anymore. Anyone who thinks that both parties haven't drifted right the last 20 years hasn't been paying attention. Yeah, there was in 2016 a socialism slant to the election with Bernie and his crybaby voters. However, a fair analysis of Barack Obama's Presidency puts him as a more small "c" conservative than GW Bush. And that means everything is slanted on the "right" side of the scale. 20 years ago Middle is where the entire Democratic Party is so you already have your "middle" party. So, quite whining and vote for the Democratic Party. It's the country's and the world's only hope right now. Don't be Brent. Don't be a duck.

If you're asking for middle of the road between the GOP and Dems, you're really just asking for a party that wants to destroy the country a little slower than the current GOP does. If you are asking for a moderate party, you have one already.

There is one; it's called the Democratic Party. I can't help you if you can't see that, though.

Probably bad news. I've got two words for Tina Smith's appointment: Senator Pawlenty.

Who knows...but she doesn't seem like the strongest candidate. And at this stage, definitely doesn't seem to match up to the heavy hitters of Emmer, Coleman or TPaw.

Jones win was of course great news. But still a bit worried about one thing. Question remains whether this is the straw that starts to reunite the GOP...and/or lights the fire on doubling down on efforts to fix things for '18 elections and beyond.

Yes, let's elect Tim Pawlenty to the Senate. The man that destroyed the budget and the credit rating of Minnesota. Something only Democrats in the State can fix and are willing to fix.
