Saw it yesterday. Overall I liked it, pretty good. I'l need to let it sink in to get a better feel for it.

Two minor things I didn't like:
          - The whole scene in the casino city. Felt like an excuse to get wacky aliens and also try to shove in some Lucasque-unsubtle message.
          - Leia as Mary Poppins. Yeah I get the want to show the power of The Force. Coulda shot it better though so it looked less hookey.

There's a lot I did like but the things you don't like always stand out more, so it's harder to describe what you did like. Except Porgs. Long live the Porgs. They deserve their own movie as far as I'm concerned.

I saw the movie for a second time with friends during my week off from work, and both of my buddies didn't like it. My one friend's complaint was that we didn't learn anything about Snoke's history. I've known this kid since we were in pre-K school, and he's loved the Emperor since Day 1. I asked him what the difference was between the two - we didn't know anything about the Emperor except that he controlled Vader until 1999; nothing about Palpatine's background was known until The Farce Menace was released 1999.

That's true, we didn't know anything about the Emperor in ESB or Darth Vader in ANH, but it felt like we were stepping into the middle of a much larger story. With Snoke it does feel more like the guy just came from nowhere. It would have been nice to learn a little about him, but I guess in the end it doesn't matter that much.

I saw Last Jedi for the second time at the IMAX theater. I liked it better the second time around.

He thought that because we were eventually given the Emperor's background in the prequels that we should also have been given Snoke's background during this trilogy. I'm of the opinion that Snoke's story is irrelevant, that Kylo Ren's/Ben Solo's story is the one that matters for the Dark Side users.

Also, he seemed to be stuck on the idea that the Rule of Two applied to all Dark Siders, rather than just the Sith. I tried to explain to him that the Sith were like a religious order, and not the name for all Dark Siders, but that didn't seem to set with him very well. I think he might have Snoke confused for a Sith lord.

Going back to an earlier discussion...

I counted it off one time, and I've read something like 160 of the 240+ old Star Wars novels. Most of them were decent with a few authors (three or four) putting out the majority of the above average works. There were also a few really bad ones in the mix.

I'm a Star Wars geek in that I just enjoyed the old mythos pre-Disney, but there were too many issues that Disney can't constrict itself by adhering to those old books. They're smart to bring in aspects of those novels (names of planets and alien races, certain Force powers, a few characters though not many, etc.) while vastly changing the overall story. There were too many contradictions, and the Star Wars story group didn't do as good of a job cobbling together the various authors into a coherent universe as Disney is doing now. That said, Disney's new books aren't all that impressive, save just a few.

I read most of them through my library, so it wasn't such a giant cost to me. There were two authors where I read their stuff and decided to buy all of their specific books in the series as they earned it.

The Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy by Zahn had to be one of them.

                              No clue on the other.

I bought all of Zahn's books, and there was only one of his books that didn't really hit the mark. The other author that impressed me being Michael A. Stackpole's X-Wing series.
