  • Paul Smiths College to add Women's Hockey

Women's hockey and quite a splash too. Their first head coach will be Team USA and Princeton alumna Andrea Kilbourne-Hill.

Wonder what conference they'll play in? The logistics say NEWHL.

To my understanding they are not an NCAA institution but a USCAA institution and I see no announcement that they are changing that, so they will not be in any NCAA conference.

Are these start up interested in hockey or interested in keeping enrollment numbers up?

This is the first quote from the new Olympian HC alludes to increased enrollment:

"I'm excited to help bring women's hockey to Paul Smith's College," said Kilbourne-Hill. "I see the addition of a women's hockey team at Paul Smith's as a win-win. It's a win for Paul Smith's College. Adding a women's hockey team will bring driven and motivated female students onto this beautiful campus."
Even if the motivation is enrollment numbers for the institution, I think the byproduct of more opportunity to play women's hockey is a net positive for the sport.

Did I miss something or does the USCAA not sponsor hockey?

They’ll be likely playing club teams for majority of the schedule.

The USCAA does not sanction hockey. One would have to assume they are going NCAA.

You can't play NCAA hockey without being a NCAA member.

USCAA doesn't sponsor coed marathon canoe either, but Paul Smith's has one of those teams. As someone said earlier, they can't play in the NCAA; they'll play mostly club teams.

A school can be affiliated with both NCAA and USCAA

They will have a tough time drawing many really good players because it is only club hockey (unless they decide to join the NCAA) and most of their majors are very much "non-mainstream," so very limiting when it comes to recruiting. Might be similar to the struggles Daniel Webster had.

Found an article where she said she left Northwood because she was missing too much family time with her kids but now she's going to do this?! Must be a nice paycheck involved to make her decide to sacrifice being able to spend time with her kids once again.

I can't see even a well-to-do institution like Paul Smith's hiring a medium to high profile coach to coach a club team. If they don't go NCAA, I'd be very surprised.

That would seem like a logical direction to go in. I believe the article said her title is the Director of Hockey and that they do have a men's club hockey team too, so they probably have some sort of three to five year plan in place for a transition to NCAA status.
