My original point is to somehow change attitudes towards the guns. We managed to somewhat do it with tobacco use and drunk driving. Can't we do it with guns? Serious question.

Yes, the obvious is to kill the lobby. That is a grand task. Dunno if we are even able to topple that tower. Get it back to "gun responsibility" and "gun safety" and "don't shoot someone because they stepped on your Pumas."

Cars require a license, insurance, hell you even need a license for the car itself. Not even close. Thoughts and prayers.

I'd be open to owner-only firing options on weapons.
Definitely open to taking away owners' right to own if they mess up.

And again, "BANZ THE GUNZ" is not an option. It's not feasible at this point in time without a major military operation, which would probably unleash a massive counter-resistence, and well, it wouldn't be good.
But aren't most gun owners law abiding good guys? If the law changes, why does that change? Say anything semi-automatic is banned with a buy back program, do they suddenly turn into blood thirsty criminals? A major military operation seems to say you think that gun owners are nuts, in which case they shouldn't own guns

Since guns are cars the laws we need are easy.

            1. When you buy a gun it has a VIN Number.
            2. That VIN number must have insurance associated with it and a licensed owner associated with it.
            3. To obtain that license you must take a class and pass an exam.
            4. If you buy a second gun your insurance goes up.
            5. The gun also has a license tax that goes with it that must be paid yearly.
            6. All of this is in a database that is easily accessible by law enforcement.

I say we re-enact the assault weapon ban that expired in 2004, and when the gun huggers cry about it we just offer them our thoughts and prayers. If it's good enough for the victims it should be good enough for the gun huggers.

#1 repeal and replace the second amendment

banning of assault rifles and high capacity magazines with a mandatory buyback (6 month grace period before you're a criminal)
can't buy ammunition without providing a valid registration for a gun that uses that ammo type
limits on ammo purchases, tracked in a national database so you can't hit every store in a 20 mile radius to stock up
must pass a yearly psych evaluation and background check to maintain your valid gun license
spouse or domestic partner must sign off on gun purchase
declare the NRA is a terrorist organization, lock up leadership and lobbyists for radicalizing the gun nuts

                  1. Most are law-abiding.
                  2. If you want EVERY gun banned and taken away, yeah, that WOULD take a major operation. People aren't just going to shrug and give up the guns. And you'd have to find all the guns that aren't registered.

Edit: I'm willing to compromise on some of my views, then I read Scooby's T/P snark and realize that anything short of BANZ THE GUNZ won't get people like him to the table to talk, so why bother? It's sad.

Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is calling for a focus on mental health and school safety in response to shootings like the one that took 17 lives in Florida, but his budget would cut funding in both areas.

Trump's latest budget would slash the major source of public funds for mental health treatment, the Medicaid program serving more than 70 million low-income and disabled people. The budget also calls for a 36 percent cut to an Education Department grant program that supports safer schools, reducing it by $25 million from the current level of $67.5 million.
Glad mental health will fix the problem.

Oh, and if you own a gun that is unlicensed and use it or it gets used in ANY CRIME. Felony.

                      There, that solves that problem.

And he wonders why people get snarky about it. It's a complete joke-the R's don't want to do anything about mental health, they just want it as a source to blame for the next mass shooting, and the next, and the next, and the next. If people want it to change, quit voting for any politician who takes $1 from the NRA. Simple as that. Otherwise you're part of the problem, period.

Yep. Only people in the USA play video games like GTA and watch any movie that has gun violence in it. Well known fact.
