I see 2017 Colby grad Jack Burton picked up another goal for the Indy Fuel of the ECHL. He now has 2 goals, 5 assists and 35 pims in 27 games, playing defense. And he's got his +/- down to zero. That has him in a tie for about 3rd or 4th on the team.

Surely 10 lousy years at Skidmore and three successive failed seasons at Middlebury should be enough to convince anyone of a bleak hockey future for the Panthers as long as Sinclair remains at the helm. They have some good but uncoached players right now, but how will they convince anyone to play there in the years to come when all they can hope for is four years of losing and frustration?

I agree with comment that Middlebury AD was lazy in coach selection process (assuming they did any looking at all). How could any rational person not agree! Frankly, that is a ginormous understatement. I also agree with the “incompetent” observation in the context of this guy as coach, let alone the commander and chief of a once top hockey program.

But, if the criteria was to find a generic, non-controversial guy, with Middlebury ties, that will look the part at the local bake sale and rotary club meetings … owns a blue sports jacket, some button down shirts, a few pairs of tan kakis and corduroys, a good pair of winter gloves and a warm hat … that will do what he is told, tow the company line, never challenge the administration or admissions department … then they definitely found their guy.

He is the generic and sterile antithesis of Beaney. Congratulations! Perfect choice!

It is a perfect marriage --- made in heaven (and hockey hell). He was looking for a soft local landing, where he can mail-it-in, after a decade and a half of building a terrible resume --- really terrible actually --- trying to coach and build hockey programs. All with the apparent support of the AD and Administration.

Maybe once he settles in, he will teach a class in the spring semesters about building high performance eco systems or some other play on words. I’m sure parents dropping a quarter million dollars on a Middlebury education will be thrilled when Junior signs up for this class.

Enough --- No excuse --- fire someone please! Stop the madness!

I have to imagine that Middlebury is considered one of the very best D3 coaching opportunities in the country. It is likely a better gig than many of the D1 positions.

How on earth was this guy the best option? How?

At any rate, things are where they are … the team sits at a dismal 3-11, and is probably worse than the record indicates. There are 10 games to go. Let us fantasize for a moment that the group, in spite of the coach, pulls itself together and goes 5-5 down the homestretch. That wraps things up at 8-16. A horrific season by all measures. I suspect 5-5 is out of reach and they will go 3-7 down the home stretch and wrap things up at 6-18. This is being very optimistic.

A 19-loss season followed by an 18-loss season. Yes, you guessed it --- coach will sell this as “headed in the right direction”, an “improvement over last season”, … and on and on …

Please, someone, anyone, for the sake of history and the Hockey Gods --- do something!

On a more positive note, I am heading over to Torrey Pines for a little golf later this afternoon if the weather holds up.

If there is a god, things will run late and I will miss today’s action. Enjoy!

They should have gone after Jim Tortorella. It might not be too late. Worst thing that ever happened to Colby hockey was when he walked out.

That was a tough loss for Colby, but they certainly carried the play. The better team definitely lost at Alfond last evening. Klein once again put on an amazing performance in goal for the Panthers with just a wee bit of help from his barely supporting cast.

              A couple of good non-conference results last night: Bowdoin 2 - USM 0; Amherst 3 - Babson 1.

If Middlebury can't/ doesn't find the will to fire the current phlegmatic and completely ineffective head coach after this season, they are relegating themselves to the moldy cellar floor of NESCAC hockey for years to come. Another subpar performance by what appears to be a pick-up group of skaters once again saved from self-immolation by a stand out performance by Klein in goal.

Immolate? Soon we will have fans immolating their cherished possessions in the parking lot before the game in the sacrificial hope that the hockey gods send a coach.

If no action? --- The flames should quickly turn to the feckless AD for creating this mess --- and worse --- not taking action to correct.

                  Phlegmatic? --- No! Shell-shocked? --- Yes!

Someone, please do something --- Anything ----

The Dreamers for God sake are now threatening to protest and block the entrance to Kenyon Arena --- And there not even supposed to be here (I think)!

Even they see no sanctuary in losing ---

Defend Panther History ---- fix this mess --- #firesomeone

Going down the stretch: Nobody's going to catch Trinity, but only four points separate teams 2-7. This should be fun!

Here's the way it's gonna go: Bowdoin will play at Trinity in the first round of the NESCAC playoffs. With three points separating 2-7, it's anybody's guess as to who will play whom, where - or who will win. In the end, somebody is going to have to face the Bantams. And, after last night, even the result of that is not a sure thing. Goaltending is going to carry the day.

Thoughts from last night: Trinity is playing itself out of an at-large bid, should they get knocked off in the playoffs. Bowdoin has dropped out of the playoff picture and needs a win over Conn Col tonight (not likely), coupled with a Colby win over Tufts, to get back in. The Camels and the Mules had a hell of a game last night - dead even in the score and shots on goal - great goaltending for both teams as their goalies both faced 37 shots, letting in only two. From a Colby perspective: Happy to get out of New London with a point, even though it means, with the Wesleyan win over Trinity, that they are stuck in 6th place and will likely face the Camels in New London again next week. It keeps getting more interesting. Biggest takeaway from the past two weekends: Trinity is vulnerable!
