The catastropic plan has an out of pocket of less than $10,000. So, I could lose $4000 on the deal.
18 y/o: Senior in HS (playing sports) or freshman in college? That answer would impact how I'd roll the dice.

Freshmen in college. No sports anymore. Was a fantastic athlete for a while but her back couldn't withstand the torque it was put under. Had to retire.

In that case I'd go with the catastrophic plan. (A HS athlete? Full coverage for everything.)

I meant the ones that begged the government for assistance because it flooded. Nice try though

I get full coverage through my office for about $3000/yr. Given my expensive injury issues over the past number of years, you jokers have all been paying for me.

my company is self insured and I pay around $300/month for my family plan.

Due to a genetic condition, my body produces excess LDL cholesterol. In addition to taking a statin (which reduces the amount of LDL your body produces, which gets me to borderline normal), I take a new specialty drug that is an injection every 14 days (this one causes my body to remove more LDL from the blood). The good news is my cholesterol is around 120 (it would be over 300 without treatment). The bad news is each injection costs around $650, and for this I pay a $0 co-pay. Plus my son broke his femur in January, which cost around $40,000. Sorry co-workers! I might be part of the reason our premiums are going up 5% for 2018 (although they haven't gone up in something like 8 years prior to this)

Wow. Lucky. My family plan contribution is $1100 dollars and the total price is $1800. Employer contribution is 70% employee, and 25% dependents.

We've found our new idea and way to ration care.

Kentucky will be the first state to require many of its Medicaid recipients to work or face losing their benefits.

Glad you revived this thread. I’m currently studying the us system compared to other nations and today’s reading has some interesting facts.
One of the favorite lines to spew out against universal care is “wait times! They have wait times!!”
The US is now behind a number of European nations on waitbtimes. Just like we are on spending proportions and actual results, life expectancy, etc.

As I approach 50 I'm hearing about long waits for the roto rooter exam. Nothing like having that on the calendar for 6 months.
