Platty and Oswego tie!!!??? Is this the first point Oswego has ever taken from Plattsburgh? Something just doesn't seem right with this team this year.

Where were you last season? Oswego upset Plattsburgh 3-2 early in the season. Here's the link to the boxscore:

          http://collegehockeystats.net/1617/boxes/woswplt1.n20

In that game Plattsburgh took almost 3 times as many shots on goal as Oswego did. Today it was much closer. Same goalie for Oswego for both Plattsburgh upsets (yes, a tie is an upset in this case), so a very nice feather in her cap. I doubt any other Oswego goalie can brag about beating and tiring Plattsburgh. The win last season was at Plattsburgh. Today was for the home fans.

Oswego needed this to offset an otherwise crappy season so far. Frankly this program should be way ahead of where they are after this many years with all the support hockey has there. Maybe this result will get them going on the right track for the upcoming playoffs. If not it will be one and done in a much weaker conference than they've ever had. They are 3 games under .500 overall and in their conference with 4 games to play and all 4 are conference games. They need to win out these games to save a little face.

Sorry. Don't follow as close as I used to when the team was more "Canadianized".

When are USCHO, NCAA, This Thread and everyone going to give kudo's to the player(s) who are the best OVERALL players.....In goals, assists, special teams. The player(s) who can step up when they need some offensive but also the player who is great at defense too. It seems that all the awards are given to the player(s) with the numbers(goals) regardless who they play against. Come on...we all know some of the teams can get 12 goals against weak teams, so goal numbers are a little out of wack. Does anyone look at how these players get goals? I'm talking about the ones who are all out for themselves. The ones who take shots when there is no shot to be taken? The ones who may have the goals, but aren't an "entire" team player. When are people going to get past the "numbers" and look at the players with the "numbers" and "SKILLS and TALENT!!!" I know it takes skills and talent to get goals, but it also takes skill and talent to work the power kill, to be a defensive player and help your team whenever they step on the ice. The player with the (+-) numbers ---your team scores whenever they are on the ice and prevents the other team from scoring when they are on the ice. Those are the player(s) I'm talking about.

I just wish write-ups and awards could go to the "ENTIRE" player(s). The ones that are great "with the puck and without it". (you all know what type of player(s) I mean)
Just thought I'd finally throw this comment out there for some feed back!!!!
This is a great post, should have its own thread as it is the same in D1. I have noticed too that the awards just go to offensive players. What about the shutdown defence who are out against the other teams top line, killing penalties, and not necessarily getting PP time. The ones who back check not just play offense. I always like to see who the coaches have out their in the last minute, trying to protect a 1 goal lead. I would rather watch a 1 goal game where my team loses than watch a 5-6 goal blowout. Sometimes the coaches have to nominate these players for the awards too.

Sounds like we need an award like the Selke in the NHL.

Discussed many times over the years on various threads - too lazy to pull them up . My continuing view - D1 coaches recruit for offense, not defense (excluding goaltenders of course) - there are very few exceptions. They believe they can teach defense but not offense - reality is few can actually teach defense and even few players can unlearn a lifetime of bad or neglected defense habits. Thus, few outstanding defenders (there are some to be fair) at the D1 level. And those there are rarely get recognized because the coaches (and most fans) don't care. I personally believe that D3 has a much higher percentage of good defenders vs total players than D1. Reason being that lots of good defenders that don't score don't get recruited at D1 level and fall to D3. Is what it is - college and professional men's hockey is the pretty much the same deal.

I agree! Not until you have another "Bobby Orr", will they be recognized as they should be. I agree, is what it is. They should have an award for that overall player who is a standout both offensively and defensively (forward or defense). Yes, who the coach puts out on the ice during the final moments, to protect that one goal lead, is an indicator of that "overall" player. The go to players the team relies on. Thanks for the replies.

Without casting aspersions on two-way players, I would suggest that D1 coaches, or all coaches for that matter, have not been overly-focused on recruiting offensive skills at the expense of defensive skills. The skills that result in pucks going into the net (passing, shooting, playmaking, forechecking) are in short supply and therefore very valuable. The skills that keep pucks out of the net (backchecking, shot blocking, defensive positioning) are more a function of system and desire. Not all great offensive players become good defensive players; it's true. However, I would rather try to get my 30 goal scorer to backcheck than to try to get my fourth-line defensive specialist to score goals.

I don't think that just because a player a coach puts out at the end of the game to protect a one goal lead is the indicator of an "overall" player. I would say "role" player, more than overall player. I'm sure there are exceptions with some teams in that their top player can play offensive and defensive just as well. But a lot of times, the player who is willing to block shots or play that defensive role, might be good at that particular skill. That definitely doesn't make them overall good. There are very few overall players; ones who can play offensive, play defense, back check, do it all, etc. Those players are usually the ones on the National Team track. And even then, some of those players are only gifted at their particular position.

I also disagree with whoever made the comment that there are better defensemen at the D3 level than at D1 because D1 coaches only look for the offensive defensemen. At the top D3 teams, the defensemen are good, but there aren't very many of those teams. So for the majority of D3, you have D that throw the puck away without looking, have slow feet, and just can't read the ice or a forecheck. Which is why they are D3.

Game going to OT after Norwich tied. Clock was not running at one point around 2:3X or 3:3X left and the refs had to run down some time. But even the Norwich commentator on NSN noted that it did not seem they ran off as much time as the clock was stopped.

Are you saying Norwich would/should not have been able to tie it up if the clock had worked properly, etc?

Not necessarily, probably not even likely as Norwich was already buzzing getting more time on offense than the Panthers. But it was an extra stoppage as the refs conferred and went over to the scorer's table and possibly extra time if they didn't run enough time down as Norwich's play by play team suggested. Certainly would have been a lot more suspicious for the Cadets if it happened in the last minute and a half as opposed to 3 and a half.

I think it was almost certainly accidental but was worth noting.
