Why? From the Broad Street Bullies to the Legion of Doom, this team is always in the thick of things.

      The Good. 2 Stanley Cup Championships (1974 & 1975), 8 Stanley Cup Finals Appearances (1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997, 2010). Had a 35 game unbeaten streak in 1980.

The Bad. Missed playoffs for five straight seasons (1990-1994)

The Ugly. They were the first team to wear Cooperalls (hockey pants), until the NHL banned them in 1983.

Where they play. Wells Fargo Center, replaced the Spectrum in 1996. Was going to be called Spectrum II, but banks with name changes, yada yada yada.

Owner: Comcast Spectator, Dave Scott, CEO. Founded by Ed Snider who championed the idea of bringing the NHL to Philadelphia. Snider died in late 2016.

Coach: Dave Hakstol, currently in his third season with the Flyers. Hakstol was a long time head coach at the University of North Dakota.

Top Current Players: Claude Giroux, Jakob Voracek, and Sean Couturier

Hall of Famers: Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Mark Howe, Eric Lindros, and Mark Recchi

Gillies also famously destroyed Terry O'Reilly indvidually and the Bruins collectively, and he beat Tiger Williams and didn't contract either syphilis or mange for having touched him.

I saw a 4 goalie fight in Portland. It was hilarious.

But my favorite moment was a bench clearing brawl where everyone paired off while the goalies, who had been youth hockey friends, just passed the puck back and forth end to end, deftly avoiding all the fights and bodies down on the ice. The linesmen were laughing so hard they got distracted and stopped breaking up the fights. IINM one of the coaches was Mike Babcock, an institution for the Spokane Chiefs.

                        14. New England Patriots

                        (a.k.a. Boston Patriots)
Why? Could easily be the #1 team in this thread, but you have to count their play from before 2001 as well.

                        The Good. Five Super Bowls, 10 AFC Championships (1985, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017). Only NFL team to finish the regular season 16-0 (2007).

The Bad. Did not win a NFL playoff game until 1985. First AFC team to go 1-15 in 1990. Went 19-61 from 1989-1993.

The Ugly: Up until 1994, the Patriots had very shaky ownership. In the 1960’s the Patriots did not have a permanent home until they moved to Foxboro in 1971. Originally owned by the Sullivan Family, the team was bought by Victor Kiam in 1988. Kiam owned and was a pitchman for Remington razors. The buying of the Patriots did not include the stadium. Robert Kraft bought the Stadium in bankruptcy. In 1990, Boston Herald reporter Lisa Olson, sued Kiam and Patriot tight end Zeke Mowatt, when Mowatt exposed himself in the locker room. Kiam defended Mowatt in a series of missteps to damper his reputation. Facing bankruptcy Kiam sold the team to James Orthwein in 1992. Orthwein attempted to move the Patriots to St. Louis. The attempt to get out of the Foxboro Stadium lease was derailed as Kraft used a hostile takeover to buy the Patriots. Orthwein had no interest in the team if it could not leave New England.

Where they play. Gillette Stadium replaced Foxboro Stadium in 2002, originally to be called CMGI Field before the dotcom bubble burst. There were proposals to relocate to Hartford and Providence in attempt to get some taxpayer funded help for a new stadium. Agreements were made and the new stadium was built adjacent to the old one.

Owner: Robert Kraft, credited with keeping the Patriots in New England. Did not father a child at age 76.

Coach: Bill Belichick, signed satanic pact in 2000.

Top Current Players: Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Unlimited list of scrappy white wide receivers.

Hall of Famers: John Hannah, Nick Buoniconti, Mike Haynes, and Andre Tippett,

I still remember the “joke” he told at a public meeting:

How are Lisa Olson and Saddam Hussein alike?

They’ve both seen a Patriot missile up close.

                          Tone deaf even in 1990.

                            13. Denver Broncos

Why? When a famous quarterback tries to be in charge in a suit rather than on the gridiron.

The Good. Three Super Bowls, eight AFC Championships (1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2013, 2015). Highest winning percentage in the NFL since 1984.

The Bad. Did not reach the playoffs until 1977.

The Ugly: Orange Crushed. The Bronco’s primary color is orange; no other pro team in sports represents the color orange more than the Denver Broncos. When the Broncos wear orange in the Super Bowl, they always get crushed. The Broncos first appeared in Super Bowl XII against Dallas. They lost 27-10, quarterback Craig Morton was intercepted four times, in what many consider the worst Super Bowl ever played. Ten years later, led by John Elway in Super Bowl XXII, the Broncos led Washington 10-0, only to allow 35 points in the second quarter alone, to an eventual 42-10 defeat. Wearing orange again two years later, Denver was creamed by San Francisco 55-10 in what is considered the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history. In the late 1990’s Denver changed their logo and made navy blue their primary color, winning two Super Bowls in the twilight of Elway’s career. After picking up Peyton Manning, the Broncos played in Super Bowl XLVIII; they returned to wearing orange again and were crushed by Seattle 34-8. Two years later, the Broncos appeared in Super Bowl L and elected to wear white, they beat Carolina 27-10. In the four super bowls in which the Broncos wore orange, they lost all four games by a combined score of 158-38. They won three of four Super Bowls, in which they did not wear orange.

Where they play. Sports Authority Field at Mile High, built in 2001 replacing Mile High Stadium, Mile High is a term used to express Denver’s high altitude.

Owner: Pat Bowlen Trust, Pat Bowlen along with his siblings bought the team in 1984. Bowlen stepped down in 2014 due to onset progression of his Alzheimer’s disease.

Coach: Vance Joseph, a longtime defensive backs coach, finished his first season as head coach last year going 5-11. In fairness, he has seen bigger failures; he did play one season for the Jets under Rich Kotite.

Top Current Players: Von Miller, Emmanuel Sanders, and Demaryius Thomas

Hall of Famers: John Elway, Terrell Davis, Floyd Little, and Shannon Sharpe

                              12. San Francisco 49ers

Why? How football was won using the West Coast Offense

The Good. Five Super Bowls all within a 14-year period (1981-1994), won a sixth NFC Title in 2012.

The Bad. Have not done very much before 1981, other than the Jim Harbaugh era not much has happened since 1994.

The Ugly: While the 49ers dominance in the 1980’s and early 1990’s is well documented, they had to start at rock bottom in the late 1970’s. Niner management developed a habit of bringing on local talent in hopes of rejuvenating their careers in San Francisco. In 1975, the 49ers traded for Stanford alum and Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett from New England. Plunkett struggled and was released two years later. Ironically, Plunkett ended up with the Raiders and won two Super Bowls. The 49ers then traded for Bay Area native O.J. Simpson who was at the twilight of his career. In 1978, the 49ers at 2-14 became the first non-expansion team to lose 14 games. Even worse, they would have had the #1 pick but it was given to Buffalo in the O.J. Simpson trade. New owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. named Bill Walsh head coach, and the turnaround began.

Where they play. Levi’s Stadium, 40 miles away from San Francisco in Santa Clara. Opened in 2014 to replace Candlestick Park

Owner: CEO Jed York, Chairman John York and Denise DeBartolo-York. In 1998, the NFL suspended Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. This was due to a corruption case in Louisiana involving riverboat gambling. DeBartolo rather than come back as controlling owner ceded control to his sister Denise in a settlement in 2000.

Coach: Kyle Shanahan, finished his first season with the 49ers. Shanahan is also the offensive coordinator as well. Shanahan was offensive coordinator for Atlanta during Super Bowl LI, you know the team whose offensive did not show up in the second half.

Top Current Players: Jimmy Garoppolo, Pierre Garcon, and Elvis Dumervil

Hall of Famers: Steve Young, Y.A. Tittle, Joe Montana, Joe Perry, Jimmy Johnson, Hugh McElhenny, Ronnie Lott, Dave Wilcox, Leo Nomellini, Bob St. Clair, Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens*, Charles Haley, Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. and Bill Walsh.
