I have an Aldi about 2 blocks from me. I'm afraid to even go into the place. "Thrift grocery store" is not on my list for places to shop.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

$0.25 for the cart and bag your own. Prices are pretty good, though.

Are the carts similar to the ones in Germany, where you put the quarter in to unlock it from the cart in front, but you get your quarter back once you lock it back in?

There's nothing scary about it, you just have to know what you're going to get there. If you know how to really cook food to taste good, then you're fine with most anything they have to offer. If you're like me and need better base ingredients to be praised on your product, then only certain things can be purchased there. Around these parts, some of their products are only sold at Aldi's, but I wouldn't call them store brand. Those are hit-and-miss. Yet you will find some of the usual mass market brands and still save on them over the prices you'd find at Walmart or Target.

And some of their food is made by brand companies... they just switch the packaging.

Fun fact of the day... I was told Kwik Trip gas stations use the same farms for their meat as Hy-Vee brand meats — the meat is actually pretty good.

Walmart on a workday in mid afternoon is terrifying. I go over to one near my work to pick up cheap salads (empty aisle) and the local talent is right out of a Dump rally. $60k trucks in the parking lot and inside are kids who are obviously malnourished and need orthodontia, and parents with MAGA hats and confederate flags on their 5XL t-shirts, all stocking up on cheesy puffs.
