Yes. For all the talk about Chicago and Detroit and their massive rates of gun violence (cause of dem Darkies!!!) take a look at the (no pun intended) darkest areas on the map. You could literally take that map and superimpose it on a map of the Confederacy and they would almost match. Dem Good Ole Boys just cant stop shooting each other...

By doing that you turn statistics into Fake News. Just like we've turned Science into fake news. Pretty soon we'll have to ask some combine in Kentucky what our government policies should be on all topics.

Hence the quote, "Lies, dam lies, and statistics." Do we all have to walk you through it?

Actually, when it comes to societal issues, when you pull a single stat and use it as the gold standard proof, you're doing the same exact thing only with a different false standard. You need to look at a great number of statistics, run them through analyses, and then determine which actually come through as meeting the necessary confidence interval. Only then can you say with certainty which matter.

But it does make for a fun clickbait headline.

By dismissing a particular stat with that cliche, it comes across as saying "I'm not capable of distinguishing a useful stat from a not useful stat, so I'm going to dismiss all stats." That adds nothing.

I didn't dismiss any particular stat. There were a couple thrown out there. It's more of a warning on what to actually believe when it comes to stats. Are we the safest country b/c of that 1000 gun stat? Or are we not because of deaths per (whatever number it was) due to guns?

One must pay attention to many details and consider many stats.

And eliminates stats from public policy. Just like we've eliminated science from public policy. Good plan. Reagan is smiling.

Couldn't agree more, I just don't think that cliche is actually a short hand for what you're saying now.

IMO it is, but will not push it, because it's a trivial thing.

Ironic that the author of article Kep posted that map from suggested high correlation with this one instead:
