That's the problem for the WCHA. Even if you want to say a tournament-caliber team has a 90% chance of beating a bottom-10 team, MSU has played eight games against the bottom-10(and has four more to go), which gives them about an 11% chance of winning all eight.

Seven wins in their final 10 regular season games puts them in a range between 7th and 14th in the PWR. That, plus making it to the championship game in the conference playoffs should be enough to get them an at-large berth.

Agreed. But i'd say that winning the next two will give them a lot more leeway than if they don't.

Absolutely. Win the next 2, and we could absorb 4 or 5 losses the rest of the way and still get an at-large bid. Split the next 2, and that drops to around 3 losses. Lose them both and itís auto bid or bust

Congrats Mankato on your 5-2 W over St Cloud, helping out both your record and the WCHA's status.

BSU has two games in hand on everyone else. There's a yawning gap between the top and bottom halves of the league right now.

UAA also has two games in hand but it seems that will be inconsequential.

Minnesota State and Northern Michigan are in the playoffs now, and strong showing by road teams this weekend would put Bemidji State, Bowling Green, and Michigan Tech in. UAH has the toughest home stretch, hosting the top four teams in the league.

Tech has a tough schedule, but if they don't finish in the top half they have no one to blame but themselves. They have six points up for grabs against each of the three teams immediately above them yet this season. If you want to be the best you need to beat the best.

yes but even if they sweep Bemidji next month they would still need help from someone else in order to go by them in the standings.
now here's a question. After the first round, say a lower seeded team has won and has to play another lower seeded team that also won. At what rink would that series be played. ? Same for the semi's. let's say BG comes to NMU and wins, and lets say whoever plays mankato also wins. At whose rink will that next series be played?

Highest seed hosts every round, so in your scenario BG would host the Championship. That assumes MSU is 1 and NMU is 2.

BG. Highest remaining seed gets to host.

ok so the team that beats Mankato in this scenario, they are a lower seed than either Nmu or BG because they finished lower than those two in the regular season, correct?. So I guess I don't get how that is re seeding?

My guess is after all the games are played in the 1st round all the winning teams are re seeded according to their current (win/loss) record. The team with the best record is the the highest seed. If 2 teams have the same record, you then go to the WCHA rules for a tie-breaker. Off the top of my head I think it is how your record is head to head against each other. The WCHA website would probably have the playoff rules there.

For example: 2,4, 6 and 8 win the first round. For the second round, 2 becomes 1, 4 becomes 2, 6 becomes 3, and 8 becomes 4. In round 2, 2 and 4 win - two hosts the championship.

Re: WCHA Season Thread 2017-18: In Which We Try For Two Bids

In plain English, the highest two remaining 1st round seeds will host the two lowest remaining 1st round seeds. First hosts the worst and the two middles play each other.

A teams's win/loss record after the first round has no bearing on the reseeding process. Whether you advance with a 2-1 series win or 2-0 series win doesn't matter.
