Joltin' Joe may give it a go.

Biden left the White House with a 61 percent approval rating and remains a popular Democratic figure.

He has remained busy in public life since leaving the West Wing, overseeing his eponymous public service foundation and co-chairing the Biden Cancer Initiative.

"Right now his focus is on the [Biden] Foundation and Cancer Moonshot, as well as getting other Democrats elected," his daughter said.

It's unclear how Biden—who would be just shy of his 78th birthday on Election Day 2020—would fare against younger candidates. In May, Public Policy Polling said he would do better than any other Democrat in a hypothetical matchup against Trump in 2020, beating the incumbent 54 to 40 percent. The same survey showed Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren would also defeat Trump, though by smaller margins.
I respect Joe, but perhaps somebody within a half century in age of our young voters would be more prudent.

I'll vote for him if he gets the nomination but I will not support his candidacy before then. That makes me different than 50% of Democrats who will throw their own candidate under the bus to create "crisis in America" syndrome for 4-8 years.

Its too late for Joe. But most Dems would support him. Rural blue dog democrats in the Midwest will probably not.

Sure they would. He has a working class vibe that older lapsed Democrats respond to. The Echo Chamber would portray him as Saddam Hussein's gay lover, but the people who listen to Fox aren't the target; by self-selection they're content to be milked in their nascent iodine veal fattening pen (triple mixed metaphor). There are still millions of Average Joes who lack any ideology but want to be comfortable, which means identity. Having an avuncular Christian white man who genuinely likes to take pictures with waitresses at diners, and who doesn't make an as-s of himself every day on twitter, would make the nut. Throw in Kamala or Tammy as Veep to pander to The Kids.

I believe he would take 400 EV minimum. We'd take back all the Lost Children of 2016 (OH, PA, WI, MI, IA) and have a decent shot at the purple peripherals (FL, NC). We certainly wouldn't lose anything by it.

Plus, and don't sneeze at this, both Rover and I would be very happy with the choice, and between us we are virtually the entire party.

Of course. Cause no one on the Democratic side ever learns anything from the previous election. That's why Kerry got destroyed after Gore. That's why the Nader effect happened again.

I expect will see more of the same BS in 2020. Meanwhile they'll be a Supreme Court seat or something on the line and the Republicans will skate through again.

    But suburban Michigan?

The gun fondlers and Pizzagaters are beyond help. The target are the people who go to Megachurches, eat fast food, and hold down mid-level grey-collar jobs. They're the ones who have been bent over and f-cked by the 1%. They're also the ones who have been brainwashed into fearing anybody who talks in language like "the 1%." So if you're Joe you talk about "Main Street not Wall Street," and "our crumbling infrastructure," and "reinvestment," and "paying back our vets for their sacrifices," and you make an emotional appeal for access to medical care. You stop people associating the Democratic party with smartypants Ivy Leaguers who care more about bathrooms and black power than jobs, and start them associating it with unions and small business and family farmers and The Little Guy.

Not sure that Democrats would have written off Michigan outside of the Detroit metro prior to 2016.

Biden may well do well in 2020 in suburban Detroit...but if so, so would many other candidates. Joe would have been a great 2016 candidate...just think 2020 is too late.

Biden is far too old. Pick someone with a birthdate on or after my mom's (Jan. 8, 1955), please. 65 is a reasonable cutoff for serious 2020 candidates.

He may be too late, yes. But I think that absent age he's an ideal candidate.

I remember liking Biden in 1988. Dukakis won. And in 2004 when Kerry won. I did like Kerry though. One of the few. He did a great job as Secretary of State. It's too late now.

Kep - it's Landslide Joe. If two years ago the Dem apparatchiks had known what a truly lousy a candidate HRC really was, Joe would have been the nominee, Hill the Veep, and 400 EVs would be low.

    Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

I agree that Biden is a person most of us Dems could easily get behind were he the nominee. Having said that I disagree with his electoral prospects a bit more than my fellow libs, but this is all in good fun as I seriously doubt he runs. Biden has a few problems aside from the major issues of age/health.

First, he's run like 3 times already and went nowhere. For whatever reason votes seem to like the idea of him running better than when he actually does it. Next, he'd run into many of the same problems Clinton ran into. He's been in DC pretty much since the city was founded. There's the occasional whiff of scandal in his career that'll get blown out of proportion, and since he represents a state that every credit card company claims its from, I find it extremely hard to believe that you couldn't tie him to some cozy relationship with the financial industry.

Lastly, Biden suffers from the same problem Gore, Dole, Palin and Hillary did, which is the media has made it their mission to cast everything they do in a negative light. In Biden's case, they'll even make up stuff. Case in point it was reported Uncle Joe had revealed the secret location that the VP is taken to in a national emergency. Letterman was even cracking jokes about it. Problem was, he did no such thing, which only took a week to report out and on the back page with all the other "corrections" due to shoddy reporting. Now if he was getting his butt buffed every day by the press like John McCain, that would be a different story...

    Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

I like Joe Biden; I think everybody does. But saying he should have ran/would have won in 2016 is Monday morning quarterbacking at its' finest.

You can argue he would have provided a reason for certain people to vote D that Hilary didn't provide. To me, that misses a fundamental point which is that whatever vein of ugliness Trump was able to tap into, those people weren't looking for a reason to vote D, they were looking for an excuse not to. And Biden would have provided just as much reason, if not more than Hilary.

There's no way Biden would have had the discipline and self-control to put up with the BS that would have come from the campaign. He wasn't even running and still challenged Trump to a fist fight at one point. He would have been Crazy Joe(Yes, even compared to Trump. Compare the damage done by the A-rated Clinton Foundation with the damage done by Trump's phony charities), and all the usual suspects here would be saying what a shame it was that there wasn't a good candidate to choose from, while bending over backwards to defend Trump at every turn. Biden wouldn't have held up, and to his credit, he seemed to understand that, and just didn't want to go through it with the other things going on in his personal life.

As for 2020, he'll be a few weeks shy of 78. He won't even be in the discussion.

    Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

Maize - you're right. tD tapped on the GOPs dissatisfaction with the current crop of idiots in charge. That wouldn't have been enough to win the general, but HRHHRC ran perhaps the worst campaign since Dewey in 1948.

There will be TV specials, books, and PhD thesis produced on this election for the next 20 years. Perhaps the best word to describe last November is, "Huh?".
