And so Union gets Princeton.... a very dangerous Princeton team.

From Jan. 13 onward, the Tigers are 9-2-1 (one of the losses to Union).

In those 12 games, the Tigers scored at least 5 goals seven times.

Seems like a series destined to go 3 games.

Sometimes records and statistics can be misleading. Especially if you don't check the competition.

They are fast and it will be a tough fought series. But if the U comes to play it shouldn't go 3.

You say the series will be tough
and sometimes may get very rough
The call of Lake Placid fills the air
and the men of Union want to be there
So when the puck drops on Messa ice
2 wins vs the Tigers will surely be nice
So bring your spirit and cheer really loud
and the men in Garnet will make us all proud..

This is a good comparison for last year's playoff series. Princeton outplayed Union for two games, but lost both. Union will have to do better than that this year. There's definitely no guarantee.

Princeton is proudly boasting its offensive prowess in its coming matchup. Lets get to work in shutting them down.

You have to admire Princeton. They never take their foot off of the gas. Ever. They have the 2, 3, 34th(tied) and 40th(tied) scorers in the country. We have the 49th, 59th, 75th and 96th. Their power play is deadly. They lead the country in PP% with 29.3%. They destroyed Brown with PP goals.

Since February they have been scoring on average 4.8 gpg and giving up 3.1 which is an improvement. If you take away the lopsided Yale game, they have only been giving up 2.6 gpg which is a very big improvement.

Men’s hockey destroys Brown, advances to ECAC Quarterfinals
The Tigers took care of business and set up a rematch with Union
              By Christopher Murphy | Mar 5, 2018

A lengthy article detailing how Princeton destroyed Brown with lots of chest thumping and loud boasting (Brown was 55th in the nation in scoring and 49th in defence - against the top 4 teams in the ECAC, Princeton is 1-6-1).

Then comes the very stern warning to us.

The Tigers will be looking to exorcise some demons against the Dutchmen, who not only swept the season series against the Tigers this year but ended the Tigers’ season last year in the ECAC Quarterfinals with a one-goal overtime win. However, after watching these games, perhaps the Dutchmen are feeling just a bit more nervous about the impending series.

              Nervous? How about feeling hungry

I have stated this on numerous occasions as unfortunately there isn't much going on on the Princeton thread to talk about such nice achievements! They lit up the BG 15-5 in combine scores! IMHO opinion I believe Veronneau and Teves are just a shade below Donato and Fox, and that's saying tons. Either way, good luck in containing that high octane O!

Heading up to Messa on Friday night- last time I was there was 2012, when Mike Condon stopped 60 shots and Union shut out the Tigers 3-0. That was impressive, but rough to watch...

As good as the Brown series looked in the box score, it took the Tigers most of the first period to start clicking on offense, in both games. They should still score in bunches this weekend, but it all comes down to a freshman goalie. It's been equal parts impressive saves and soft goals for him this year. Keep an eye on Robinson and Hallisey, two senior forwards who don't grab headlines, but deserve just as much credit for the team's offensive successes. Also interested to see Jack Adams, who I believe was at one point committed to Princeton.

I am still learning the game of college hockey and was wondering about situations where one team "runs up the score" on another when a game is clearly out of reach. According to the 5 Unwritten Rules of Hockey https://www.minnesotahockey.org/news...errer_id=80470

Show sportsmanship when you have a big lead late in a game.

"Running up the score sends a bad message ..... It’s poor sportsmanship."
" ... there’s no need to have a big celebration when someone scores to make it 7-0. Keep it classy."

Being up 5-0 against Brown with about 10 minutes to go, is it necessary to keep your first two lines in there firing away? More scores for Veronneau and Kuffner? And then to go and have a big celebration after scoring goals 6 and 7? Is this sportsmanship?

Being up 7-2 against Dartmouth in the third, was it necessary for Kuffner and Veronneau to keep piling it on making it 9-2?

I can appreciate going all out for 60 minutes, but couldn't a coach maybe keep the 4th line in their a little longer? In the book, "Blue Ice: The Story of Michigan Hockey" it talks about Coach Heyliger (Spencer Penrose and Hockey Hall of Fame) and his impact on not just on Michigan but also all of College Hockey. The idea of "running up the score" was completely foreign to him.

It does operate as an "unwritten rule" in college hockey, particular now. It wasn't unusual back in the day to see ridiculous blow out scores but coaches have a lot more restraint now. The end of a blow out is always dangerous not just because of tempers but because players don't tend to be as alert and that's when injuries happen. Coaches often all but sit their top lines and pairings then, so it kinda takes care of itself.

You're the last ones to know anything about sportsmanship. Whether on the winning or losing end. And especially when you know the league won't punish you.

                              Here comes Princeton !!!!
Ron Fogarty explains how he is going to beat us.
Kuffner & VĂ©ronneau Earn Milestones; Princeton Heads to ECAC Quarterfinals
                              https://youtu.be/MpVR0qwC7yQ

Great video - this is a team that is brimming with self confidence, almost giddy.
Top Line - Kuffner, Veronneau and Richie - Three of the 12 players from Ontario, Canada. Two years ago this was the much talked about remarkably skilled freshman line.
According to Ron Fogarty, "We just have to maintain to have the right structure against Union on the defensive side which allows us to score goals or have opportunities ... we are going to have to get the puck behind their defence and attack them down low and have a "shot first" mentality". Sounds pretty simple to me. Veronneau says "If we play the way we did the last two weekends we should be fine... " Piece of cake !!!!

This is a hockey team that is really "full of itself". Interesting that Eric Robinson, the Captain and a very good player in his own right, was not in the video.

I hope someone plays this video in our locker room. Friday cannot come soon enough.

PS - Fogarty's boast about 9-2-1 in the past 12 ... 6 of those 9 wins came against RPI, Brown and St. Lawrence. Princeton is 1-6-1 against the top 4 ECAC teams

With the incredible parity in ECAC College Hockey (and for that matter, all of college hockey), it's best to approach each opponent with a little bit of humility and a great deal of respect.
