  • 2017 LLWS: There's No Crying In Baseball!

NH coach, in a regional elimination game, chooses to take a potential 2 game suspension to prevent his player from the mandatory AB. NH almost pulled off the rally against ME, but alas, karma wins again.

Get outta here with that, what a horrible thing to do.

I thought the penalty used to be a forfeit.

I thought it used to be, too. Maybe they changed it in case a coach legitimately forgets?

Also, the Virginia junior softball team was disqualified from the championship game last weekend because of a photo on Snapchat of half the team giving a finger to the host Kirkland, WA. Apparently the big strife from that game was Kirkland was stealing signs, which is now illegal. Not sure how an umpire can prove it but Kirkland did have a player and coach ejected.

They figured out the sign means "throw it underhanded real fast"? :P

There are minimum playing time requirements for every player in LL. I think it is 1 AB and 3 innings in the field. Failure to do so gets the Coach penalized.

Oh. Why would you go into contortions for one batter? Or was this a blatant, widespread scam?

I mean, the whole thing is really a scam. These are all-star teams, not actual town teams, and at that they're ringers who have basically been bred for this. Like everything else, it's completely ruined.

That's every sport though, including the one we're all here for. Some players aren't good enough to crack varsity in high school, others end up transferring to school out-of-state to play junior hockey in hellholes like Fargo and Sioux City, in hopes of being recruited by an NCAA team. Some go on to varying levels of pro from there, rarely at a high level, and rarely for more than a couple of years before reality sets in.

It was an elimination game, and they were down to their last at bat. It was either score and win the game, or lose and season over right then and there.

The coach is a dick. Not only did he blatantly avoid a well-known rule he gave away a chance at the player to be an unexpected hero.

I might have a bit of bias on this one.

To give you some history I made the All-Star team for East Tonka back in the day. Our town won the MN state tournament 6 times between 1978 and 1985 with the 1985 team making the LLWS and included Jim Brower who had a decent MLB career.

During our run to the state championship I was asked to play 3B (normally played 2nd) in our single elimination game after a 2nd round loss. This was a crunch move due to an injury.

I had a SO, 1 single and 1 error by the end of the 3rd inning and our manager was set to sit me for the 4th on when I said put me back at 2nd (the SP also played 3rd) because we had another player able to enter the game that was a very solid P and that (not feeling prophetic just cocky) he won't regret it.

From the 4th inning on I went double, home run, triple to complete the cycle (every hit had an RBI for total of 6), started 1 DP and had 3 very fine defensive plays leading to outs in a game we ended up winning in the bottom of the 6th including my triple driving in the last 2 runs. Sadly we lost in I believe the Great Lakes Regional final and fell 1 game short of the LLWS.

I still have the clipping somewhere in my basement back home.
