Wait... you think Mick is a great vocalist?

No disagreement on Ent, but I believe that Gilmour is up there and stands just fine on his own.

    Mick? No way.

My favorite Bass player is maybe Chris Squire. Just loved that nasty tone.

    RIP

Well. I was thinking "frontman." Fair point.

And in terms of "musicianship," all those bands have strengths and weaknesses.

At first glance I'd easily put Floyd ahead of Zep.

        Not so fast though.

        Gilmour > Page

        but

        Bonham > Mason

        and

John Paul >>> Waters as a musician (playing instruments)

Wright and Plant really don't have counterparts.

So it's probably a wash although I'd still say that Floyd > Zeppelin although for me they're 1A and 1B at this point.

And Steve Howe is a better musician than anyone in either of those bands, or at least was in the 70s.

Well... Mick may be the greatest frontman of all time.

Not sure even Plant can really compete although I'm sure he was sexier in his prime than Mick was.

At one point, there was supposed to be a project featuring Squire and Page, but it fell through.

Squire went on to a "new" YES with Trevor Rabin and Page I believe went on to the Firm.

That would have potentially been a very interesting band.

Could have been down and very dirty.

I don't think you can compare. Those are two very different kinds of girl. (Robert's girl is a lot smarter, but Mick's girl is a lot more fun before the, you know, high speed chase and firey crash.)

Yeah... the wife thinks Robert circa 1972 is a rock god.

                  She likes Stone's songs.

She (like every woman that has ever commented on it) thinks Roger Daltry is creepy.

LOL. Roger Daltry is creepy. There is something deeply wrong behind those blue eyes.

He does have a human moment, however. He somehow got cast in the BBC's 1983 production of The Comedy of Errors and, completely defying all my expectations, he is adorable and actually great.

                    But other than that...

I watched him for fifteen years, sitting in a room, staring at a wall; not seeing the wall, looking past the wall; looking at this night, inhumanly patient, waiting for some secret, silent alarm to trigger him off. Death has come to your little town, Sheriff.

I've seen everyone I need to see, except two. Van Morrison and Peter Gabriel. And at this point, Morrison is kinda notorious for either being really great, or totally disinterested, and going through the motions, so that would be a crap shoot.

As for favorite guitar players, I come from a bit of a different bent, based largely on my preferred tastes of '80's post punk. Course, there's still room for the classics. I like melodic soloists.

                      Robert Quine

Frontman? Freddie Mercury. Bon Scott. James Brown (if you count his "band"). Axl could have been one of the greats, but IMO GNR didn't have the longevity.

                          Those are certainly frontmen.

                          None are close to Mick.

Freddy Mercury certainly ranks with Mick, along with David Bowie, Prince, Elvis, Frank Zappa, George Clinton, James Brown, Chuck Berry, and others.

IMO, Freddie is the greatest, not an insult to Mr Brown.

As much as I love the others mentioned, I can't say they were better. Prince's musicianship is untouched. Mercury's theatrics AND singing put him on top (hence Brown being a close second). Bon, and I say this with great bias, was not a great singer but I can't name a better wailer. Elvis....everyone is biased in that realm. He was nicknamed The King for a reason. Bowie is underappreciated, I think. Even now. Never got into Zappa. Clinton, he just did what everyone else did, and more showy. Love him, but not top ten.

Hell, Janis Joplin. Not a great singer. She wailed. But she captivated audiences as a show-woman. Pure emotion. That was her hook.
