I think you missed it. The $200 is a tax to allow you to turn on the TV and watch BBC, SKY, etc. Even if you don't have cable, you're paying the pounds to Her Majesty's government.

No, I get that. But let's be honest, the garbage on regular TV is hardly worth watching anyways. So it's pretty analogous.

The only problem I have with the U.K.'s system is that unlike our progressive TV access fees, theirs is a regressive fee.

Considering that the U.S.'s approach to the public airwaves, ie auctioning them off and/or giving them away, has its own issues, I think a saying about people in glass houses applies.

When I was a wee lad there were the following big aircraft manufacturers
              Boeing
              Douglas
              Martin
              Lockheed
              North American
              Consolidated
              Grumman
              Vought
              Northrup
              Vultee

If you flew, it either in a Boeing, Douglas or a Lockheed.

The Navy flew primarily Grummans, with odd duck manufacturer thrown in.

The Air Force bombers were Martin or Boeing. Fighters were all over the place with Douglas, North American, Vultee and a few others making jets go real fast.

              I'm feeling nostalgic.

That's what you get when you buy it by the yard.

                              Don't give white trash money.

Speaking of, I was down around Clifton, VA this weekend. My god, there must be a higher density of New Jersey Brickface Xanadus there than any place outside of Greenwich or San Francisco. I fully recommend locals drive around on a nice fall day to gawk at the bozos. These people need to be taxed at > 100%.
