US with a late breakawy goal by Murphy with a great pass from Webster and lead 1-0 at the end of the 1st period. US looked a bit out of sorts to start with playing on the big ice.

The U.S. needs to find ways to get more pucks to the net. Lots of perimeter passing that doesn't result in enough good chances. Sweden has looked they're on a full-strength penalty kill for roughly 90% of the time, but so far it's been very effective - down just 0-1 they are still very much in the game.

It worked - Makenna Webster scores the winner on a nice one-timer to win it for the U.S. 2-1 in OT.

I was wondering what was going on after Russia beat Canada 2-1 the other day. I have seen the first 2 periods of US/Russia I some things are clear. The Russia U18 team skates much better (comparing against competition) than their national team. They remind me a bit of Bemidji in that they need to slow and clog the same to keep the score down. They look to lack shooters and that has hurt them. It is 5-1 and an entertaining game despite some of the worst camera work ever seen at a hockey game.

Game ended 5-3 with the US on the penalty kill most of the 3rd, often 3 on 5. The refs were already making odd calls all game but the 3rd looked like a Putin Special after the first where the US had all the power plays. Heise was booted for checking from behind in the 3rd.

Heise was booted for checking from behind in the 3rd.

I watched the replay and it was definitely a body checking penalty not a checking from behind. As you say it was a strangely officiated game.

So we get St Cloud and the Vermont Catamounts this week. We should be able to handle these teams but clearly we can't take any game for granted.

The Huskies are only 5-14-2, but they have been playing better since blitzing us for 3 goals in the final 10 minutes of our second game. Since then they are 3-2-2. And they have twice the Quality Win Bonus points we do

Vermont is only 5-13-4 but they have a win vs Clarkson under their belt and ties against current top 10 teams Maine and Providence. (Dare I say the Catamounts have 5 times the QWB points we have!) I watched the last 3 minutes of reg and OT in their tie yesterday against Providence and Vermont had the better of play over that time.

Wente- Zum-Schammel continue to develop into a legitimate first line, the PP convert a few, and we tighten up the 'd'. That's the prescription for 3 wins and the players can be in a really good mood for 'skate with the Gophers' after the game Saturday

I watched the last 3 minutes of reg and OT in their tie yesterday against Providence and Vermont had the better of play over that time.

I watched most of the final two periods of Saturday's game, and the officiating is even worse than the WCHA. They'll call penalty after penalty against one team, then they'll switch for the next period, and then they quit calling penalties altogether, even though the same things are happening. An obvious penalty on PC that took away a prime scoring chance went uncalled, and the Friars then went to the other end and scored the goal that decided the game. The Friars were the better team that day, but the officials shouldn't play such a big role in deciding games.

That's the prescription for 3 wins and the players can be in a really good mood for 'skate with the Gophers' after the game Saturday

Aren't we back in the deep freeze by then? That'll put a damper on anyone's mood.
