Trump Is What Happens When a Political Party Abandons Ideas.

Much of the premise of Bartlett's piece is true, but I disagree with his assertion that a moderate wing of the republican party is starting to show some life. If that really were true, why are there more democratic senators (3) who vote with trump at least 50% of the time than republican senators (2) who vote with him fewer than 90% of the time?

I also take issue with his belief that there is an impactful rebirth of the kind of republican intellectualism he writes of. One of the factors in the rise of trumpism is the dumbing down of America. 99% of the people voting for trump and the republicans nowadays are just not sophisticated enough to understand the damage their votes do, to themselves or the rest of the us. So even if a handful or conservative commentators -- like Bartlett himself -- are sounding the alarm, the only ones paying attention are people like those of us in this thread. No trump voter will read this and realize the dreadful mistake they made. Given a chance, they will vote for him in again in 2020, and given a chance to vote for a trump supporter or apologist in whatever election next comes their way, that's who will get that vote too.

The fate of this nation rests on the backs of two sets of voters. The people who voted for Obama twice and could not be bothered to vote in midterms or in 2016 have got to realize that their vote in 2018 is probably more important than the one they cast in 2008 or 2012 in all ways other than the (partly) symbolic nature of electing someone other than a white man for president. And we have to hope that 2 years of continued trump disasters politically will dull any sense of excitement among his weakest voters and they stay away from the polls the next couple of elections.
