Lol at chips on the shoulders. Syracuse series will be interesting, I will be paying attention to that outcome for sure. What a long roadtrip, no home games until January. The seasons fly by!

Syracuse will be playing their first CHA conference series of the season when they play Penn State this weekend, but they've played a tough schedule so far, too, against ranked teams. Wisconsin beat them pretty handily, but they did well against Providence and Boston College. They had two weeks to prepare for a single game with BC this past Saturday, so they should be well-rested when Penn State comes to town. They've played for the CHA title the past two seasons, as you know, and they're always a fast hard-playing team, so it's going to be another grinder of a series for Penn State - should be a good one.

I'd give the Orange more credit than that for the 1-0 loss to Wisco in the first game of the series.

I would, too, if they weren't a conference foe.

Syracuse is up 2-0 on Penn State after one period. Syracuse scored 44 seconds into the game and (according to the live stats) never let up. Penn State managed three shots on goal, all on a power play. Shots on goal are 13-3 for Syracuse, and shot attempts are 19-4 for Syracuse. We'll see what Jeff Kampersal can do during the intermission to put a spark in his team.

After two, the score remains 2-0 for Syracuse. Shot attempts are 30-15 for Syracuse, and shots on goal are 19-8 for Syracuse. Penalties are 5-2 against Syracuse. The teams are tied for shot blocks and faceoff wins. I hate "watching" a game on live stats, but you get what you get.

Syracuse takes the 3-0 win in a game loaded with penalties - 8 penalties for Syracuse and 7 for Penn State. Shot attempts were 42-27 for Syracuse, and shots on goal were 27-14 for Syracuse. Not having been able to watch the game, that's it for any comment.

Penn State freshman Sophie Slattery scored both goals for Penn State, her first two collegiate goals, in a 2-2 OT tie against Syracuse. This was another game loaded with penalties, a total of 19 (11 against Syracuse and 8 against Penn State). Syracuse scored both of their goals on the power play, and Penn State scored one on a power play. Shots were 25-23 for Syracuse. Senior goalie Hannah Ehresmann made some amazing saves today and kept things close for Penn State.

Re: 2017-18 Penn State Women's Hockey - There's A New Sheriff In Town

Something interesting (to Penn State fans, anyway) that I was unaware of, until I looked at stats from this weekend series at Syracuse, is that freshman goalie Chantal Burke replaced sophomore starter Daniela Paniccia for the final 8:41 of game one, rather than using senior goalie Hannah Ehresmann. Interesting, because this season's goaltending so far has been a job split only between Ehresmann and Paniccia.

Head coach Jeff Kampersal's confidence in playing Chantal Burke is a good sign for Penn State goaltending. Ehresmann is a senior, and presumably Paniccia will be the starter for 2018-19 and 2019-20, but Kampersal will also (in addition to Paniccia and Burke) have the option next season of playing goalie Cam Leonard, who is currently redshirting her freshman year. Leonard is a four-time attendee at the USA Hockey National Player Developmental Camp, and a two-time attendee at the USA Hockey Goalie Development Camp.

If there's a positive to take away from this weekend's OT tie in game two (their fifth OT tie of this season), it's that Penn State played an even better game two than they played a game one. They also did it against a very physical team, and did it on the road. That's all new for Penn State women's hockey, and a very good sign for the program.

Penn State freshman forward Sophie Slattery (Edina, MN) was honored as CHA Rookie of the Week for scoring her first two career goals in a 2-2 OT tie against Syracuse on Saturday:

Re: 2017-18 Penn State Women's Hockey - There's A New Sheriff In Town

Penn State gets ten days to prepare for their one-and-done against #8 Cornell on Tuesday, November 21, before a quick turnaround three days later to play in the Nutmeg Classic tournament on November 24-25 with UConn, Yale, and Quinnipiac in Storrs, Connecticut.

Cornell is currently 3-3-0, but two of those losses were against unbeaten #1 Wisconsin, and the other loss was against reigning national champion #4 Clarkson, so their record is deceiving. Regardless, the non-conference game against Cornell probably isn't a matchup that Penn State will be too concerned about. They have the Nutmeg Classic coming three days later, so the Cornell game might be a chance to try different line combinations, new plays, or anything else they've worked on over the ten-day prep, and tune things up for the Nutmeg Classic and the second half of the season.

It's kind of hard to get too worked up over a non-conference single game like this one against #8 Cornell, but a win over a ranked team would be great anyway. Beating a ranked team would be a nice payoff for a Penn State team that works and battles as hard as this team does, and be great motivation heading into the weekend tournament.

I've been told to ignore pairwise this early, but>Cornell and their 3-3 record is #6 in the pairwise. So this is your chance to do some early pairwise damage and knock them off

Doing some early Pairwise damage sounds good!

Great to see a write-up on Penn State assistant coach and former RIT player Celeste Brown:

Re: 2017-18 Penn State Women's Hockey - There's A New Sheriff In Town

It's game day today at 3:00 for Penn State and Cornell in a one-and-done, the first time these two programs have played each other. However, Penn State head coach Jeff Kampersal has a lot of experience against Cornell from his years at Princeton, so this matchup is nothing he hasn't seen plenty of times before today.

So what's on the line this afternoon? Nothing for either program, no points for either team, so it's hard to call this one. Will Kampersal have Penn State in all-out attack mode today, being three days away from the weekend Nutmeg Classic tournament? Will he use today's game to experiment with line combinations? Will he have Penn State trying anything new with this single mid-week game? And what will Cornell bring?

I don't care if it's a one-and-done...I hope Penn State can knock off a ranked team today.

Re: 2017-18 Penn State Women's Hockey - There's A New Sheriff In Town

Penn State and Cornell skated to a 1-1 OT tie, Penn State's sixth OT tie (and eighth OT game) in 15 games. Penn State had a 1-0 lead with 1:28 left in regulation, when Cornell got the tying goal after pulling their goalie, but neither team could find the net in OT. Penn State finished with a 22-21 lead in shots, 18-9 lead in blocked shots, and both teams were penalized five times. Penn State's lone goal was scored by junior Kelsey Crow on a power play, her third power play goal of the season.

The last three games against ranked teams have ended in OT ties. That's not such a bad thing.

Up next this weekend is the Nutmeg Classic tournamment with UConn, Quinnipiac, and Yale.
