Garrett Metcalf Leaves UMass Lowell to Mercyhurst Lakers.

The Salt Lake City, Utah native was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.
Metcalf played in just four games for Norm Bazin’s team (UMass-Lowell) in 2016-17, posting a 2.59 goals against average and .913 save percentage.
I would think Mr. Metcalf would need to red shirt a full season however not positive of that fact.

Re: 2017-18 Transfers
You don't have to sit if you already graduate from your original school and enroll in a masters/higher program that isn't offered at your original school. Obvously this applies mostly to redshirts or kids who are on top of things enough to graduate in 3 years.
D1 kids can also transfer to D3 (or club) teams without sitting out. As far as I know there's no non-grad way to transfer D1 to D1 without sitting. There used to be an exception for kids who were cut from their teams strictly for not being good enough athletically, which required approval from the former team/coach, but the NCAA removed that completely threeish years ago.

The NCAA is basically forcing a kid in this type of situation to go to a D3 school.CCT '77 & '78
