it's ok because there are a greater number of D voters, so they win with ease....

See Clinton, Georgia and Arizona for evidence.
"The only letter anyone should be voting for is (D)."

Your words. No taking into account whether the (D) is a worthy candidate or not. Just vote (D). Yep. Gotcha.

I stated why I think that is true. You skipped the entire first paragraph. Again, I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm trying to convince the Democrats that are here that we not waste our time on the 45% of people that are hopeless. That's the ~38% of Trump supporters, and the ~7% of Independents that would fail any college course that requires critical thinking.

The thing to bear in mind is that Trump could just as easily have aligned himself with the Democrats, and he would have still been just as ***tty a president. Would that be just fine then because democrat? He is not a conservative or liberal person.

And I am saying to continue to try and chip away at the 7% and the 38%. You won't get a complete flip, but you may change one brick in their wall so to speak. Then maybe another brick. Then maybe a third brick. It will take time.

He had zero shot of getting the Democratic nomination. He picked Republican for a reason and that reason is obvious.

You're thinking of the 2016 election cycle. I'm thinking more meta about authoritarians and where they might emerge from. Chavez. Castro. Stalin. Mao. etc. I said "just as easily", but the reality is that Trump could have MORE easily been a leftist. And won due to blind party loyalty.

The majority in this country, and every country, is on auto-pilot. They vote for a party for the same reason they root for a team or have a religion. They picked it up from the culture they grew up in. They aren't reasoning politically -- they aren't reasoning at all. They are taking in stimulae and filtering it through Kantian categories impressed on the wax of their infant minds by their parents, and their thoughts reinforce their preconceptions because both come from the same factory.

Divide adult citizens into equal thirds by intelligence, or more politically correct by educational achievement. Ignore the non-major parties for simplicity. The top third ("animal") is about 70/30 Democratic, the middle third ("vegetable") is about 70/30 Republican. The bottom third ("mineral") is the Deliverance throwback -- but it doesn't vote or really participate in public life much at all. Occasionally the GOP finds a gimmick to activate a small portion of it; Evangelical Christianity was the last one. But for the most part it, like Cthulhu, waits dreaming in its La-Z-Boy with the built-in cupholders.

Education and social caste used to cut across political ideology. Only since the GOP's Great Stupification, going into overdrive with Rush and O'Reilly, has the vegetable portion of the electorate become predominantly conservative. The Republicans used racism and tub-thumping fundamentalism to pull over ahem "cultural" (white nationalist) voters. People above the intellectual Mendoza line gravitated either to the Democrats or to abstruse libertarian sects.

With Trump in the White House and the GOP with a chokehold on our democracy the Vegetables are in control, now, for the first time in American history. There are no adults in the room. So when Trump and the GOP fail bigly the Vegetables will either slink off and become apathetic (let's hope) or they'll dive down to the mineral level and activate the Orcs. That's how real authoritarian states operate. Mussolini and Hitler only held the Vegetables' allegiance long enough to get hold of the mineral substratum that exists species-wide, evenly distributed across the entire globe. The common enemy of all mankind; the id; the Hessian Steppenwolf.

Just as easily, how? There was no one on the left side running that's anywhere close to that. Hell, if anything the Green Party is even less authoritarian. As I see it you knock those down as you come to them. I'm not going to get "worried" now about something that doesn't exist in our politics when we have a full blown ******* in the White House now.

All this does is reinforce my fear that we haven't hit bottom yet. And if that's true by the time we figure out we're at bottom it will be too late.

I agree with this part. Purge the insanity which is currently Republican by name.
Conservatives agree with you that Republicans are stupid and dangerous and need to be expunged.
