  • The British Parliamentary election of June 8. Will she stay or go?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk

Referendum on Brexit, it looks like.

Tories should keep the majority. Scotland will vote for SNP. Labour will be on the Speaker's left again

This may strengthen May, but when the SNP wins like every vote for parliament in Scotland another independence referendum happens that much quicker. maybe she feels that's inevitable, but she's about to become a stronger leader in a smaller country. Really, what reason is there for the Scots to stay at this point?

I don't think it will strengthen her at all. I think it was a riverboat gamble she had to make.

Looking at the other stories on that site I'm going to go out on a limb and say that is either wildly out of context or just flat out made up.

So, in local elections in the UK (not honestly sure what it is, like state elections here?), UKIP got destroyed and lost almost every seat they had, apparently

Isn't Jeremy Corbyn basically the UK's version of Bernie Sanders? Will be interesting to see if that form of progressivism does well in the UK which seems to be a bit more socially liberal than the US (national health care for example).

Corbyn is more like the UK's equivalent of Dennis Kucinich, without, you know...

Labour under Corbyn probably has its heart in the right place but is underwhelming. They need a modern this guy.

Yep. Not DLG, who on this date in 1940, sealed the fate of Dear Neville, but WSC.

He was the last imperialist PM of the UK. And who's motto translated as "Faithful but Unfortunate"

A short note on Lloyd George's entrepreneurial skill:

"When the Order of the British Empire was founded by George V in 1917, Lloyd George is said to have asked Gregory what he could ask for an OBE, Gregory's reply was "about £100 a time".

Between 1917 and 1922 when Lloyd George resigned, 25,000 people had received the OBE. A nice little earner. Lloyd George is estimated to have amassed in his private bank account over £1.5 million pounds from the sales of honours. (Value £150 million plus today)."

Ah, that makes sense. Churchill is the sort of political leader who would catch the imagination of a second grader.
