    Well......I didn't see that coming

I'm pleased for Grant Potulny, and it makes me feel good that so many Northern fans are thrilled with this hire.
But honestly, I'm a bit surprised. Grant is young, and has no head coaching experience.
This could be a home run for NMU, but it could just as easily be a big miss. Really hard to say at this point. Grant has had success in pretty much every role he's held in hockey and that bodes well, but it's a different animal when you have an entire program of your own you are responsible for running.

No matter what, I hope he does well at Northern and wish him all the luck in the world. I've just picked up another college hockey team to root for.

That's definitely a possibility. When I've seen him speak including doing chalk talks in front of our booster club he's been very impressive. I hope he does well at NM and eventually becomes a candidate.

Well if Lucia decided to only stay a couple more years, that might not be enough experience for Potulny to be comfortable with hiring him at MN.

Need to step away from hockey game to let the adrenaline settle a little.

Was watching parts of U-18 game. Why was Reedy not playing, or was he and I just missed him?

He was listed as the 13th forward, but did get in the game right away. I believe it was the first shift. After that I don't remember seeing him out there or hearing his name called.

Gophers have named All-American Tyler Sheehy to lead the team as Captain for the 2017-18 season. The Gophers will go with three Alternate Captains next season: Leon Bristedt, Mike Szmatula and Ryan Lindgren.

“We’re really excited about the guys we have in the locker room next year, and that starts with our captains,” Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said. “Each of them is ‘all-in’ on being a Gopher, and they are terrific representatives of our program and the University of Minnesota.”

Agreed, although I thought Steve Johnson who has shown offensive skill on D might have a shot at an A too. Ryan Lindgren improved as the season progressed with more physicality on D and offensive skill. No doubt he'll be a top Dman in the Big Ten next season.

    Interesting quote on Casey Mittelstadt:

“Casey is one of these anomalies that comes along every few years. We’ve watched him play against his peers in international tournaments and seen him play in the USHL and various camps, and he always makes a difference. It doesn’t really matter where he plays, because you get the same game from him, no matter the environment.” – Mike Morreale, NHL.com

Not sure if anyone hasn't seen it yet, but they're selling naming rights to Marriucci. As_holes.

Just read about it. IF the report is accurate, a pay-for-placement scheme at Mariucci is a horrible idea. Vote "Hell No" HERE.

    Meh.

I mean I hate it in general but $$ talks.

No matter what they call it you still have the excitement of walking from your car to the arena, seeing all the other fans walking in decked in their Gophers gear, moving through the entrance, up the escalators, seeing all the murals, hearing the band, seeing the banners, smelling the food....

If it helps keep the ticket price increases more reasonable going forward (doubt it!) I wouldn't mind too much either. Maybe we'll end up with a Wells Fargo Arena right across the street from the TCF Bank Stadium, each just a couple of miles from U.S. Bank Stadium, just across town from Target Field.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Offseason 2017: Reload

A Gophers athletics official told me the U of M (much like other schools) is looking at various potential revenue streams. While there are no plans anytime soon to remove Mariucci and Williams from the building names, the official said adding a sponsor name to those buildings and their existing names is a “possibility” that would be determined on a case-by-case basis. So yes, it does sound like naming rights could be coming to those hallowed arenas — not as a replacement for the existing names but rather in addition to them.

Gophers name alum and former Captain Scott Bell as the new Assistant Coach replacing Grant Potulny.
