A guess that I have on this one would be Katie Mikkelson going from Ohio State to University of Guelph.

Thx. It's not so easy here in the east keeping up with off-season matters other than UND.

I don't mean to state the obvious here but it seems Canadian Universities are really gaining ground through commits and transfers. I know there was some discussion on another thread a while back about the rise of these programs now that the funding has improved. Are we slowly seeing a sea change that will reduce Canadians playing for US schools?

After playing 32 games with 15 pts (10/5) her freshman year, she played just the first 7 games this past season, 0 pts.

I believe that this was an injury, not a coaches decision. The myriad Harvard fans could validate over on their thread...

Rather than start another thread I decided to throw this here. Brielle Bellerive of Clarkson decides to leave and finish her schooling and hockey career in her home town.

Which D is transferring out? I had not heard anything about us having another D transfer out.

Canada has a 5 year eligibility. NCAA has 4. If a player transfers back to Canada after playing 3 years in the NCAA, they still maintain 2 years of Canadian eligibility. Saw this last year with a couple Ohio State players. Not a bad gig for a player to finish her degree in 3 years and transfer to a Canadian school to do a masters and play hockey. Especially if they are not getting a lot of playing time.

Mikkelsen was a freshman, does this mean that she has 4 year's eligibility in Canada?

Not just Duluth. Happening at a number of other schools. Players being cut outright or removal of scholarships to help nudge out.

Even heard Ohio State is having tryouts in August to make cuts.

Its one of the issues with schools committing players earlier and earlier. Only way to make room is to either cut or de commit.

Tryouts in August?! Might be just a total violation of NCAA rules but go ahead and believe what you heard.

Forgive me for the newbie question (my daughter plays D3): how do scholarships work? I thought once a school commits to a player then they're on the hook for the full 4 years regardless?

Don't know if things have changed (others here should know) but 10 years ago scholarships were for one year at a time even though the misconception existed that they were for 4 years. They were mostly renewed every year for the 3 following years unless the student/athlete did something to derail the process.

Once the NLI (National Letter of Intent) was signed the school was committed and could not "decommit". But that doesn't stop some programs from attempting to persuade the student/athlete in certain circumstances to commit to something in writing that would give the program a loophole to cut the student/athlete loose, as unethical and despicable as it may be.
