Good period of hockey with some great chances by both sides. A couple of "ticky-tack" penalties, one called on each side, with the U.S. was able to capitalize on one called on Finland, which gave the Americans a 5 on 3 man advantage. Finland almost got the go-ahead goal on a 3 on 1 rush with seconds remaining, but Rigsby came up with a big save to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Second game in a row that the woman doing commentary on NHL.com has said Raty played at Duluth.

Are they going to test team USA for dangerous/toxic levels of steroids after the game?

And horrible call on Finland behind the net for a penalty.

USA completely dominated the 2nd period only to give up a very late goal, allowing the Finns to make it a one goal game at 3-2. The U.S. had roughly a half-dozen power play chances but often struggled getting the puck to the net. This game shouldn't be that close.

                          Excellent game.

Ref gets an assist on J-Lam's empty netter.

The sparse crowd got tremendous value for their ticket money tonight.

And thanks again guys for the assist on the stream.

                            I'm at the games.

The officiating tonight was brutal, and heavily favored the U.S. It was an odd game, because the U.S. dominated play for long stretches, but couldn't score at even strength until there were eight minutes left.

The reality is that since the dominant performance in Turin in 2006, Canada has only won two worlds championships, in 2007 and in 2012. The USA has won 6 of the last 7 worlds since 2007. What is "hiding" this domination is that Canada managed to win the two Olympic golds in during that time period. The win is 2010 was driven partly by a partisan home crowd, and the emergence of a certain MPP on the scene. The win in 2014, yes while build partly on character, was in my opinion a combination of some luck, a turn of events that changed the momentum late in the game and smart coaching by a veteran NHL caliber coach.

The US has in general been the more speedy team during the last 10 years. That is partly due to the focus on that element in the US development program. You actually see the same trend amongst the men, where the US seems to be blessed with speed, compared to their counterparts.

The other factor in the women's games is grass roots growth. Numbers are still growing in the USA, but the numbers have been virtually flat in Canada for quite some time now.

Not sure what the right answer is, but in recent years, all I see is the USA team speed being too much for the Canadians on many occasions.

And yes the tourney is not over yet, (Remember 2012 when Canada reversed a round robin trashing on the hands of the US to a 3-2 win in the Final in Burlington), but in general the trend has been a faster US team winning more often than not over Canada.

Common denominator is Mel Davidson........not saying she has done a good job in the past..........like all Leaders it is time for a change......game has changed.....same type of players from the past don't work now. USA development programs in both mens and women's programs is better than what Canada has at this time.
