Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

Mike Ayers - right guy, wrong time. Agree 100% with Dan, he's got more qualifications right now than Souza OR Stu, so that's another reason he probably wouldn't be willing to come back ... now.

I'm sure he realizes if Souza knocks it out of the park, then he'll probably never get a chance to coach at his alma mater. That decision (the one hiring Souza) has been made already, so there's nothing he can realistically do, other than wait and see. Unless he wants to put his until now ambitious coaching career in neutral, and tie his future to a former teammates' future. And let's face it, if he joins Souza's staff, and the new regime fails, it's highly likely the whole staff is invited to leave, and the long-awaited national search will follow elsewhere.

    So, to recap ...

    * Ayers comes back to UNH, Souza succeeds, and Ayers' chances of running the show in UNH are nil;
    * Ayers comes back to UNH, Souza fails, and Ayers' chances of being next in line are slim and (likely) none;
    * Ayers continues with his current path, and that is his only realistic chance of ever getting a sniff at UNH HC.

That does not mean I'm rooting for Souza to fail, nor does it mean UNH should not at least approach Ayers now.

And yeah ... usually it's the guy after the guy who succeeds the icon (best I could do ) who has a better shot at success. UNH and BC are two obvious examples. But not always, and I'm rooting for Souza 'cuz I'm not into five more years of mediocre UNH Hockey before we get down to real business. I'm at the age now where patience is wearing thin, and I can't assume I'm still going to be around when the "wait 'til next year" crap finally comes to an end, y'know?

Why? UNH has an opening after Umile retires next April, and they can then pick the most-qualified guy...... oh right, Blue Skies decided to lock himself into a decision 3 years before he had to. That's management 101 right there, eliminate options before you have to.

And locking up Mike Souza has the added benefit that he has been able to link his credentials to the UNH results the past three years, thus burnishing his reputation to future recruits who see the clear upward trajectory.

Excellent points. The only point I could counter is that the BC head coaching job is less attainable since York is a lifer then Greg Brown is next in line - and BC just keeps coaches forever....realistically Ayers has no chance of taking over at BC. There may be a tiny chance he would have a chance at UNH eventually. I think Souza is the aswer though. Young and hungry and knows what it takes to get UNH back to a national contender.

Steve "Count" Cedorchuck would probably disagree with you on that one, Lemonade.

Had to stop you right there before you got in too deep with the internal BC propaganda. The other guys post WW2 - y'know, those HOF'ers like Snooks, Lenny the Rug, and the incumbent - tended to win 2/3's of their games, which is a pretty good reason for BC (or any school) not to move on to the next guy. But if you look at BC Football and Hoops historically, the idea that BC is unusually patient with their head coaches falls apart quickly.

And don't forget, unlike Lenny and Jerry - who both coached other D-1 programs for over a decade apiece while waiting to return to The Heights - Brown (or even Ayers) has virtually no HC experience. If Brown is indeed the anointed one, BC would be following the same path they took almost 25 years ago when they bypassed York (still at Bowling Green IIRC) for Lenny's top shoe-shine boy, the aforementioned "Count".

You can bet that WIS is lighting candles and saying its prayers that once York decides to step down, we're all treated to the quality hockey BC was known for back in the glory days of the mid-'90's. Please please please please dear lord

Also it's a great move for us TvR fans coz just how often are we going to watch the GKnights play on Wednesday Night Rivalry Unless of course, you fork over the dough to have an NHL channel like some of us hockey nuts do...sigh.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

Fun with Souza, Dick & Stu - Offseason Edition - Part VIII

Four men move to Tee Eight
The tee box has been moved since last time
It has been moved a lot
"This used to be a Par 4" says Dick
"Now it is a Par 3"
"I bet you like that a lot" chirps Stu
"You must not like your job" the boss growls
"You are a lame duck, Dick - try it"
"Shut up and golf, guys" says Souza

Stu will go with the old grip and rip one more time
It has worked well, got him back to par
This time Spot hands him his wedge
Stu thought it looked like his six
Stu hits his wedge straight but short
He will have to chip uphill to reach the green
    Spot smirks at Stu
Silly Stu!! Not smart to pick on the boss
Not when the boss has his pal on your bag

Dick hits next and pulls a three wood
Spot left a note on Dick's bag to hit the three
Spot knows Dick can't hit it as well as he did long ago
Dick hits it long and true
Long and well over the green
Dick and the boys think they hear a ping
They will pay it no heed
    At least for now

Souza has seen his pals hit long and short
Souza thinks of the Three Bears
No, not the ones with Fish and Game
The ones from the young kids tale
One is too long, one is too short
Souza pulls his five wood and lands it on the green
Smart play - that was just right
    Good shot Souza!!!

Souza and Dick take the cart to the green
Spot and Stu walk the short walk to Stu's ball
"Why did you sand bag me, Spot?"
"You were being mean to Dick, Stu"
"Why does he like Mike and why does he not like me, Spot?"
"Dick likes you Stu. Dick likes me too. But we are not pie zahn"
"You don't say. What makes you think that?"
"Dick is pie zahn. So is Puff. So was Chris, and so was Torts"
"So it's like that flick with Hank Hill and the Mob?"
    "You might say so, Stu"
"Is Mike pie zahn? Souza is a port you geese name"
"Mike played pro in the old country. Close 'nuff for Dick"

Stu gets to his ball, and Spot hands him his wedge
    Again
Stu is still not on board with what Spot said
    "What about you, Spot?"
"I found out too late, Stu"
"You wanted to be the next Dick too?"
"You bet. You think time spent in Flin Flon was for fun?"
"No, I know that. When did you find out?"
"I asked Puff once. He told me to fuggedaboutit"

((( ... sorry to interject, boys and girls, but today's fun word is fuggedaboutit. This is a pie zahn expression which roughly means ... well, actually it's kinda fuzzy what it means exactly. Basically, it's believed to be Sicilian slang for "sorry kid, but today's just not your day, capiche?" but don't quote me on that, since I'm no more pie zahn than either Spot or Stu. Let's continue, though ... )))

"Did you ask him any other times, Spot?"
"Yes I did. Then he gave me a pink slip. What a jerk"
"You think this is what made Scott leave too?"
"Could be. Scott is no more pie zahn than you or me, Stu"

Stu feels like his last three years have been a lie
When it rains it pours, I guess
And the rain sure is hard right now
He hits his wedge to five feet from the pin
It is a great shot, but he is still
Spot shakes his head. He has felt this way too
But Dick still took his calls after he was fired
That makes Dick a saint in Spot's book

Up at the green, Souza and Dick wait for the men
They see big tall steel posts up at the ninth hole
Souza's ball is twelve feet from the pin
Dick has not found his ball yet
The ping must have been his ball off a tall steel post
Dick plans to take a mulligan from the fringe

Souza putts first and leaves his bird short by an inch
    Ouch
"You can pick that up" says Stu
Stu is only five feet away
No one says "Nice shot Stu" or "Pick that up"
    Shocked? Not quite
So Stu lines up his putt, and drains it for a par
Stu puts his hand in the hole to get his ball
There are two balls in the hole though
Stu knows one is his ball
Stu thinks the other must be Dick's ball
Stu is now This is quite the shock for sure
He thinks "Should I be nice or should I be a jerk?"
This may be a tough call for him to make ...

    ( ... to be continued tomorrow ... )

The score after eight holes (Par 30) stands:

    Dick -1 (??) Souza E *Stu E

    Dick still has the lead
We will see soon if Stu has honor

Nice building and easily accessible. I went to a Bruins game down there two seasons ago (Pesce's rookie year) and it was a good time. Pick one of their lesser opponents and tickets are dirt cheap.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

''Canes come to Boston on Saturday night, January 6th, same night that the Brown Bears (not to be confused with the three remaining bears being harassed by Fish and Game on the golf course with Souza, Dick, Stu, and looper Spot) come to the Whitt. Decisions, decisions; maybe the powers at be can keep tabs (not to be confused with Dick's favorite drink on the golf course) by posting Bruins-'Canes video updates on the Jumbotron?
