Heck, they don't lock their doors in places like Delano (about 20 min west of the metro).

Only other place I'd retire would be CO. Trade lakes for mountains. That's about it. I couldn't stand a 70-degree Christmas. It wouldn't feel right. It's the small things I like about MN.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Instead of Cold for several months, you'll be dying of the heat for several months.

You don't have to shovel snow either. Plow services aren't trrribly expensive.

Heat and I need the exercise. . Instead of some tract home, build a house with southern exposure, lots of windows and closed cell foam. No drafts, consistent temps no matter where you are in the house. You won't know it's cold . When you have no place you have to be, snow isn't that big a deal.

We're looking at places that don't get too hot, plus the good houses in AZ (old Mission or new, quality Mission Revival, with walls thick enough to withstand a nuclear strike) balance hot and cold perfectly.

Smart thinking. The guys who built houses pre air conditioning understood air flow and temperature differential.

Now, heat rises and unless you have a whole house fan, has no where to go.

Have you thought about building into the side of a hill??

I've never thought about building at all, to be honest. I am risk averse, to say the least.

I'm pretty sure ASHRAE says bollocks to that.
