The plutes are always going to find a way to pay the bare minimum under the current system - trusts, shell corps, state residency, fancy deductions, offshore accounts, accounting loopholes, carefully planned charitable donations, etc. You name it, and there are smart lawyers and accountants who know how to set it up.

Cut the bulk of the special breaks, the intricate exemptions/deductions shenanigans, and end the excessive legal structuring of private wealth that creates trust fund babies. Make everyone pay full boat at the current bracketed rates, on all personal income. While we're at it, since corporations are legally people per SCOTUS, they should be paying those same rates.

I have friends who own pit bulls. The dogs are friendly to a fault, because their owners don't suck.

Every year I get into arguments about Lee. He is so vastly overrated. Those great battles he won were against some of the worst Generals in the Union Army like McLellan. (who I think had money on the South to win he was tanking so badly) Jackson was the true greatness of the South as proven by the fact that after he died Lee went on to make some epic blunders. (see: Pickett's Charge) If Grant ran the Army of the Potomac at Bull Run the South loses in 6 months.

My impression is this is the consensus of military historians. Lee should have been President. He was a Washingtonian figure -- inspirational but very weak on tactics.

Lee should've been President of the CSA just for the fact that Davis was so hated and ultimately incompetent. Davis was our glimpse at what a Ted Cruz Presidency might be like - outside of Texas, I think he's actually more hated than Donald at this point!

Yeah but unlike Ted I am not sure Davis was as bad as many people thought he was.

Lee would have been a horrible President because he would have run the CSA into the ground financially and in the War. Sure he would have been a Reagan style leader who inspired the people (well Virginians) but he didnt have the brain to understand the faults of the CSA. My guess is if he was President instead of Davis The Confederacy breaks apart before the end of the War. He was too beholden to Virginia and would have shunned many of the other States which would have brought about financial ruin much quicker.

Then imagine his ridiculous strategy used on the full theater of the war. He would have done everything he could to try and invade the North. Most likely he would have pushed to go to Washington as soon as possible in hopes of ending the War quickly and when the Army of Northern Virginia fails (which they wold have) the War dies.

So I guess you cold say the War ends early whether he is correct or not but the CSA dies within 2-3 years whether he is successful or not.

                              JMHO.

But that's the only way for the South to "win." Either they deliver a knock-out blow right off the bat and force a Constitutional settlement where they are re-admitted to the Union and slavery is protected from federal government interference (what they really wanted), or the North relocated the capital and the European powers now have the opportunity to weaken the United States by trading with the South and supplying them manufactured goods and weapons, eventually forcing the North to lose faith and letting the South become independent.

There's no other way for the South to retain power in an industrializing world where slave labor is no longer competitive with machines. Even then it buys the South a generation at most, and they probably blow it because of cultural issues, but it does buy them time. The South lost all their leverage when they fired on Fort Sumpter -- they needed to wait to play off the northeast vs the "west" (i.e., Michigan / Illinois) if they were going to get a seat at the table. But having started the war, that was the only way to survive.
