At least, that's how NC Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger explained it to me.

It is interesting that Republicans dont know what insurance means yet many Republican voters work/own/manage insurance companies.

The ratings shifted...none of them flipped to blue.

The ratings shifting is good enough news less than 24 hours later. That is what happens when you pass legislation that has like a 17% approval rating

that deep analysis is almost as fast and shoddy as the passage of the bill (are any congresspeople up for election today?? )

The reporting may be shoddy but Cook is the real deal. Before 538 they were the best analysts of the Beltway. Also they're not just cherry-picking on this vote, they update their ratings all the time based on everything from votes and economic trends to dead girl / live boy stories. They've been quite accurate over the years.

Frankly, if the only effect of this vote is to move 20 seats one step to the left the GOP should be partying like it's 1994. As the story drags on, I think it has the potential to really damage the Republicans in the marginal districts. If the uncertainty starts spreading into markets (it is after all 1/9th of the entire US economy) then this could be the start of a long but steady slide towards 11/18.

Sorry, I meant to say towards blue. I'm typing on a small phone.

I'm going to try to put this to bed.

Nate gave Hillary a 93% chance of winning election the day before Comey became Putin's errand boy. It is true that the margin was still about 88% on Election Day, but 88% means more than 1 time in 10 Trump wins.

There were problems with the polling in the run up to the election but the problems were with the polling, not the poll analysis. The analysts did math. The math still works; the same probability functions are why basically all complicated technology works.

Tuna fish is still tuna fish if a .00002 grams in a can is, uh, not tuna.

All this is blah blah blah unless people actually vote, which we're not going to know until Nov of 18.

Republicans are making a strategic gamble. Its not far fetched. The gamble is that while only 17% of people approve this legislation, all of those people will vote. On the other side, the Dems will be too lazy to show up. Under that theory, you can pass massive tax breaks for the rich and completely deregulate Wall St because only their people are going to show up in the mid-terms. This isn't completely unrealistic. Dems didn't turn out in 2010 and 2014 even though Obama was relatively popular amongst his base.
