    #10 - Denver Broncos
    Points: 176.9775
    Super Bowl Championships:
    3 (XXXII, XXXIII, 50)
    NFL Championships: 3 (1997, 1998, 2015)
    Playoff Appearances: 22 (23-19 (0.548))

The Denver Broncos start our countdown of the Top 10 teams on this list. The Broncos joined the American Football League in 1960, but failed to have any success until the mid-1970s, posting 0 winning seasons in their first 13 years in professional football. Denver made its first trip to the postseason in 1977, and advanced to the Super Bowl before falling to Dallas in Super Bowl XII. The Broncos would make two more trips to the playoffs in the 1970s, but were unable to replicate their 1977 success. Denver also struggled in the early 1980s, but their fortunes changed dramatically after acquiring John Elway in a trade with the Baltimore Colts. Since Elway's arrival in the Mile High City in 1983, the Broncos have more Super Bowl appearances (7) than losing seasons (5). The Broncos made 5 trips to the playoffs in the 1980s, winning 4 division titles, and advancing to 3 Super Bowls. Unfortunately for Denver, the Broncos lost each trip by massive margins. Denver was a middle-of-the-pack franchise in the early-mid 1990s, making 2 trips to the playoffs, and a trip to the AFC Championship game in the 1991 season. Denver dominated the 1996 season, going 13-3, but were upset by the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars. The Broncos responded with two of the franchise's best seasons in 1997 and 1998, both of which ended with Denver hoisting the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl Champions, knocking off Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXII and Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII. Denver was a solid, but not spectacular franchise in the early part of the 21st Century. From 1999-2011, Denver made 5 trips to the postseason, won 2 division titles, and made 1 trip to the AFC Championship game in 2005. However, Denver struck gold again in 2012, wooing Payton Manning to join the squad. The Broncos immediately shifted to contenders, and from 2012-2015 won 4 consecutive division titles, made 2 more trips to the Super Bowl, and knocked off the 15-1 Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Following Manning's retirement after the 2015 campaign, Denver had a dominating defense, but mediocre QB play led to a 9-7 season. If they can return to the playoffs, win some hardware, and perhaps lift another Lombardi Trophy, they will likely move up in these rankings. Until then, they sit on the edge of the Top 10.

I just want to say that my #4 is supposed to be the Giants. Because if it were the Jets, I'd be really, really stupid. And I'm only sort of stupid.

            #9 - Chicago Bears
            Points: 179.4963
            Super Bowl Championships:
            1 (XX)
            NFL Championships: 9 (1921*, 1932*, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1963, 1985)
            Playoff Appearances: 25 (17-18 (0.486))

The Chicago Bears come in at #9 on this list. The Bears franchise began in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys, and had almost immediate success. The Staleys were named the American Professional Football Association (the league would change its name to the NFL in 1922) in 1921. After changing their name to the Chicago Bears, the franchise continued to have success, posting winning records in 24 of their first 25 seasons. The Bears won the first ever "playoff" game in 1932 en route to being named NFL Champions for a second time. The Monsters of the Midway would claim NFL titles in 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, and 1946, including an astounding 73-0 victory over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL Championship Game. However, the Bears best season in this stretch was in 1934 when they were a perfect 13-0 in the regular season, but fell to the Giants 30-13 in the title game. While the Bears would put together several strong seasons following their 1946 title, they often finished 2nd, missing out on playing in the NFL Championship Game. The Bears would win another NFL title in 1963, which would be the franchise's last playoff game for nearly 15 years. From 1964-1976, Chicago failed to post a winning record. The Bears made 2 trips to the playoffs in 1977 and 1979, but were unable to win a game. Finally, in the mid-1980s, da Bears returned to dominance. Between 1984-1991, Chicago won 6 division titles, played in 3 NFC Championship Games, and posted arguably the greatest defense in the history of the game in 1985 when they won Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots. The Bears made only 2 playoff appearances between 1992-2004; however, they won back-to-back division titles in 2005-2006, and returned to the Super Bowl in 2006, losing to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Chicago's most recent playoff appearance was in 2010, when they advanced to the Conference Championship, but fell to arch-rival Green Bay. While the Bears have struggled the past few seasons, they will look to Bear Down and get back to their franchise's winning ways to move back up this list.

              #8 - Oakland Raiders
              Points: 184.5871
              Super Bowl Championships:
              3 (XI, XV, XVIII)
              NFL Championships: 3* (1976, 1980, 1983)
              Playoff Appearances: 22 (25-19 (0.568))

The Oakland Raiders come in at #8 on this list. Oakland joined the American Football League in 1960, and, while originally named the Oakland Señors, the franchise changed its name to the Raiders before the 1960 season. The Raiders struggled in their first three seasons, largely due to having to select the leftovers in the first AFL draft. However, Oakland would surge to prominence in the AFL, winning the AFL Championship in 1967, but falling to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. Oakland would play for the AFL title in 1968 and 1969, and continued their success following the AFL-NFL merger. The Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship Game in 1970, and made 5 straight AFC Championship Game appearances between 1973-1977. The 1976 season was special for Oakland, as the Raiders dominated the NFL, going 13-1 and winning their first Super Bowl over Minnesota in Super Bowl XI. Oakland would make only 1 playoff trip between 1978-1981, but made it worth their while, as they were the first Wild Card team to advance to the Super Bowl, and knocked off Philadelphia in Super Bowl XV. After a contentious battle with the NFL, the Raiders moved to Los Angeles following the 1981 season. The L.A. Raiders went to the playoffs in each of their first 4 seasons in the new city, including a return to the Super Bowl following the 1983 season. The Raiders knocked off defending champion Washington in Super Bowl XVIII for the franchise's third Super Bowl title. The Silver and Black would continue to field a competitive team throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, including 1991 squad that advanced to the 1991 AFC Championship Game. The Raiders moved back to Oakland after the 1994 season, but have largely failed to replicate their previous success in Oaktown. The Raiders did see a brief outburst of success between 2000-2002, including the franchise's fifth Super Bowl appearance following the 2002 season. However, Oakland would not make the playoffs again until 2016. While the Raiders look like a legitimate threat in the AFC for the next few seasons, the franchise announced that it will move to Las Vegas in either 2019 or 2020, and it remains to be seen how the fans will support the team at home in the next 2-3 seasons. If the Raiders can win some more hardware and perhaps another Lombardi Trophy, they will likely move up these rankings.

My result (with L. Zikatanov) regarding the connectedness of nodal decompositions of Fiedler vectors has received a fair amount of attention; it can be read here. The AMS Notices wrote a profile of me that discusses this result. It is kindly referred to as the Urschel-Zikatanov Theorem.

                      #7 - Washington Redskins
                      Points: 189.2103
                      Super Bowl Championships:
                      3 (XVII, XXII, XXVI)
                      NFL Championships: 5 (1937, 1942, 1982, 1987, 1991)
                      Playoff Appearances: 24 (23-19 (0.548))

The Washington Redskins come in at #7 on this list. The franchise joined the NFL in 1932 as the Boston Braves, but changed its name to the Boston Redskins for the 1933 season. The Redskins would play in the NFL Championship Game in 1936, falling to Green Bay. The franchise moved to Washington D.C. in 1937 and quickly continued their success, advancing to, and winning the NFL Championship in 1937 over Chicago. The War Years were particularly successful for the Burgundy and Gold, as they won 4 division titles from 1940-1945 and won the 1942 NFL Championship (again over Chicago). The Redskins struggled after World War II, failing to make the playoffs for 25 seasons from 1946-1970. Washington would finally get back in the postseason in 1971, and in 1972, the Redskins advanced to Super Bowl VII, falling to the undefeated Miami Dolphins by a touchdown. The Skins would make the playoffs in 3 of the next 4 seasons, but were unable to get back to the Super Bowl. Despite fielding competitive teams from 1977-1981, Washington failed to get back to the postseason; however, that would change beginning in 1982. From 1982-1991, the Redskins were a dominant team in the league, winning 5 division titles, playing in 5 NFC Championship Games, and advancing to 4 Super Bowls. Led by the Hogs, the Redskins won Super Bowl XVII over the Miami Dolphins following the strike-shortened 1982 season, won Super Bowl XXII over the Denver Broncos following the strike-shortened 1987 season, and won Super Bowl XXVI over the Buffalo Bills following the 1991 season. Since 1991, Washington has won 3 division titles and made 6 postseason trips, but has been unable to advance past the Divisional Round. The Redskins barely missed out on the playoffs in 2016, and will look to improve next season to get back into the postseason. If they do so, win some hardware along the way, and perhaps capture a fourth Lombardi Trophy, they would likely move up this list.

Well, it is true. I believe every team (save for who is ranked #1) is potentially a Super Bowl win away from moving up at least 1 spot on the list.

Good thing I'm getting tired of the NFL. Won't be much of a sacrifice at all to finally turn them off for good.

The NFL has given the National Institutes of Health less than half of the $30 million they promised for concussion research five years ago, and after repeatedly trying to influence how their “unrestricted gift” was used, the league is letting their agreement expire with no plans to finish paying up.

                              Super Bowl Championships:
                              4 (XXI, XXV, XLII, XLVI)
                              NFL Championships: 8 (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990, 2007, 2011)
                              Playoff Appearances: 32 (24-25 (0.490))

The New York Giants come in at #6 on this list. The Giants joined the NFL beginning with the 1925 season and had almost immediate success. After back-to-back 8-win seasons, New York was named NFL Champion in 1927 after an 11-1-1 campaign. The Giants would have another strong campaign in 1929, going 13-1-1, but fell just short of Green Bay, who went 12-0-1. From 1933-1946, New York went to 8 NFL Championship Games, but only came away with 2 NFL Titles in 1934 and 1938. The Giants only made 1 playoff appearance between 1947-1955, but resurged in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Giants would win the 1956 NFL title, and play in 5 NFL Championship Games in six seasons between 1958-1963. Indeed, no team has played in more NFL Championship Games than the New York Giants. Following the 1963 season, New York struggled, missing the playoffs 17 consecutive seasons. However, the Giants roared back to life in the 1980s, making 5 playoff appearances, winning 2 division titles, and advancing to and winning the franchise's first Super Bowl in 1986, knocking off the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. The Giants would start the 1990s in grand fashion, winning Super Bowl XXV over the Buffalo Bills in 1990. New York only made 2 more playoff trips in the decade though, never advancing further than the Divisional Round. The G-Men would rebound though in 2000, advancing to their third Super Bowl, but falling to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. New York would make the occasional postseason trip from 2001-2006, but made a shocking run in 2007, running the table as a Wild Card before knocking off an undefeated New England Patriots squad in Super Bowl XLII. Big Blue would stand in the way of another Patriots Super Bowl in 2011, as the Giants again stunned new England to win Super Bowl XLVI. Since their fourth Super Bowl title, the Giants have been largely mediocre, failing to advance to the playoffs from 2012-2015. New York did advance to the postseason in 2016 for an NFL record 32nd time (tied with Green Bay and Dallas), but fell to the Packers, leaving the Giants as the only team ranked in the Top 10 to have a losing playoff record. The Giants will look to get back to the playoffs next season and could crack the Top 5 with a fifth Super Bowl title.

                                Super Bowl Championships:

                                NFL Championships: 5 (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994)
                                Playoff Appearances: 26 (30-20 (0.600))

The San Francisco 49ers come in at #5 on this list. The 49ers joined the All-America Football Conference in 1946. Despite four winning seasons in the league, including a 12-2 mark in 1948, the 49ers were unable to claim an AAFC title, coming closest in 1949 when they were runner-up to the Cleveland Browns. San Francisco joined Cleveland and a previous version of the Baltimore Colts in merging with the NFL following the 1949 season. The 49ers had mediocre success upon joining the NFL, posting winning seasons from 1951-1954. San Francisco got their first taste of the NFL postseason in 1957, but fell to the Detroit Lions, who would win the NFL Championship. The 49ers would not get back to the playoffs until after the AFL-NFL merger, making back-to-back NFC Championship Game appearances in 1970 and 1971. San Francisco would struggle for most of the rest of the 1970s, including consecutive 2-14 seasons in 1978-1979; however, the 1980s would see the 49ers ascend to the pinnacle of professional football. From 1981-1998, the Niners would dominate the NFL. In that 18 year stretch, San Francisco posted 17 10+ win seasons (the only season they failed was the strike-shortened 1982 season), made 16 trips to the playoffs, won 13 division titles, advanced to the NFC Championship Game 10 times, and won 5 Super Bowls. San Francisco squeaked past Cincinnati in Super Bowls XVI and XXIII, winning by 5 and 4 points respectively, but dominated in their other trips to the big game. In Super Bowl XIX, the 49ers crushed Dan Marino's Dolphins 38-16. San Francisco replicated the feat against John Elway's Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, decimating Denver 55-10 in the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history. The 49ers also dominated the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, winning by 23 points. San Francisco struggled in the late 1990s and early 2000s, making only 2 trips to the postseason from 1999-2010, never advancing past the Divisional Round. The Niners would resurge between 2011-2013, winning 2 division titles, advancing to 3 NFC Championship Games, and appearing in their sixth Super Bowl, falling to Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII by 3 points. The 49ers have been on a downward trajectory since 2013, including a dismal 2-14 record in 2016. San Francisco will need to turn it around if they wish to move up in these rankings.
