I'm taking some credit since I wanted Clemson to win and I stayed across the street from the Stadium at an old Holiday Inn Express for the Frozen Four.

An Ohio St. fan friend of mine just posted something on Facebook making fun of 'Bama for losing....apparently forgot what Clemson did to his team a week ago...

Top comment on deadspin's writeup of the game:

Steve Sarkisian got four touchdowns out of Alabama tonight, but like so many other nights he needed a fifth.

Bout time somebody took Bama down.

Didn't realize your allegiance to the Sioux didn't begin at birth. South Carolina to North Dakota is a long winding road.

Jmo, but that sure looked like an illegal pick #3 pulled on that winning TD.

Is there a rule for contact within a yard of the line of scrimmage? It at least started that close. And given the contact was the guy who was directly covering him, and not taking out the next guy over, I suspect they didn't see that as a pick.

If he leveled the other guy, that would be a different story. Directly, I mean- he ran a great route- using the defender who was protecting against a slant to block the other defender. So many times you see a guy that wide open completely get missed by the QB- it was nice to see a perfect pass in one of the biggest situations out there.

Here's the rule, NCAA rules state that players cannot exhibit "an obvious intent to impede" a defender on a pass play.

I've read at least 10 different opinions on the play with 5 going one way and 5 the other way.

Then there's this one that was called back.

All of the coaches on the Film Room broadcast discussed this. All agreeed if anything the Alabama back basically pulled him to the ground. It was going both ways.

If it was a pick, the back did nothing to help his cause.

Two of Clemson's TD's were picks. The defender needs to play hard through the pick so that it can be called by the official.

The first pick should have been called. Second one was more iffy.

I remember that one. The ND player never even tried to look like he was running a route. But the Clemson guy seemed to pretend a route better AND just fall down into the defender. That kind of acting (or reality) isn't nearly so blatant of a block. Even better, when the two players tied each other up, the remaining defender ran BEHIND them in space- which totally took him out of a possible play. At this point on the field- there's no point in running in the end zone, unless you are right next to the receiver, as any catch is bad. A better attempt would have been to jump the route and attempt to break up the pass.

Anyway, IMHO, the Clemson player wasn't nearly as obvious as both Notre Dame receivers. And that's why it wasn't called.

edit- BTW, I don't care who won. But Bama fans have nothing to really complain about- I missed the helmet to the head play, but saw when Watson was basically clubbed in the head. That was very dirty, and could have been grounds for being DQ'd. And there were non-calls when Bama played Washington, too. Live by the call, die by the call.

Interesting tidbit from SI -- this season, Clemson beat every team that's won a national title since 2009. That's a heck of a season.

Honestly, I thought it looked like the defender pulled him down. Sure he probably went down a little easier than he normally would, but when a guy has his arms wrapped around you, the pick should be the last thing called in that situation.

Well, my Sioux allegiance did begin at birth, as I was born and raised in North Dakota. My Clemson ties are a bit unique though. When I was about 4 years old, my dad worked at a plant with a guy who played at Clemson. He gave my dad a t-shirt to give to me, and I wore it all the time. I loved the paw. I started following Clemson from then on. When I was 7, my parents took me to Death Valley to see a game (against Duke...and CU absolutely killed them), and I was hooked. North Dakota doesn't have D-1 Football, so it was easy to root for the Tigers. I've been to about a dozen or so games since. I'm biased for sure, but Death Valley is one of the top 5 places to see a college football games (and there are many publications that agree). If you ever get the chance, it's a beautiful place.
