Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2017 and Beyond
Holy cow - I have a stalker!?!?!
Truth be told, '32 ... I'm spoiled, I suppose. The kids were young in the early days of The Whitt, and going to games as a family was some of the most fun I had with the kids (though Mom has never been a hockey fan). Full houses, good if not great teams, terrific atmosphere ... there was no better place around here to enjoy quality entertainment/competition. Hey, I didn't even block the kids' ears during the old profane cheers - and amazingly, they turned out just fine. Both went to UNH, and one may have even been a student of yours in recent years.
As they've gotten older, I've lost my best excuses to go to the games ("Hey, the kids want to go, you gonna take 'em? No?? OK hon, I'll take one for the team!" ) which, as folks who've been around long enough will attest included many road games in the good ol' days. But things change, and it hasn't quite been the same with the UNH program either. I've been able to fill that time with other things, and I'm guessing many other inactive UNH fans have done the same. Nowadays, I'm lucky if one of the kids invites me to join them at the HE Semis, which we've done the last couple of seasons (even without UNH being there). It's nice to know they also have fond memories of the times we spent chasing games all around New England.
If I thought my missing these games was part of the downfall, I'd probably still find a way to go. Personally, I blame it all on the collapse of the Old Man of the Mountain up in Franconia Notch, which happened a month after UNH's 3rd period collapse to Vanek and the Gophs in the 2003 D-1 Finals.
I really do hope you're right about Coach Souza. We're not getting any younger. Be well.
