Still waiting for the NESCAC season to begin, and anxious to see some DIII women's hockey action, took a run over to Newport to watch Norwich visit Salve Regina for the Cadets NEHC season opener.
Salve Regina plays home at the St. Georges School Howard Rink which may explain some to the 76 shots the Cadets put on beleaguered Seahawk goalie O'Connell, as the ice sheet is not a large one.
Neither team came out crisp and it took some stellar goal play to keep either squad from scoring. O'Connell was repeatedly tested in close on open odd man rushes. Norwich goalie Robert made a nice stop on Seahawk captain Cronin at 8:07 of the 1st. O'Connell withstood a Cadet charge in the final minute of the period and stoned Cadet Hulst point blank one timer at the stickside of her crease with :20 to go.
The Cadets broke through midway in the 2nd, scoring 3 times. In transition on the powerplay, Labbe entered the zone down left wing, dropped a pass to Conway and she followed her shot for the rebound which was in to O'Connell's stickside. The play came moments after Robert had trouble coming half way to the red line out of net to clear a puck. Schwenzfeier extended the lead cashing in on a 3x1 Cadet rush (Tiberi feeds ahead to Rossini down right wing and into Schwenzfeier scoring up to O'Connell's gloveside). Cadet Odbratt made it 3-0, coming off the Norwich bench, picking a Seahawk pocket and drilling an open look forehand inside the far, gloveside post. O'Connell faced a mere 35 shots for the period (32/35 .914% not bad for a period)!
The 3rd featured 4 penalties on each squad and the period had little flow. Labbe scored unassisted with a nifty move, picking up a loose puck in center ice and walking into the zone, cutting left on her forehand, scoring on a laser up gloveside from low in the left wing circle. Odbratt notched her second of the game breaking in on left wing and dropping the puck for Conway; her shot was saved by O'Connell, but Odbratt had circled the net, got the rebound on her forehand and drilled it home.
Salve Regina falls to 0-3 and entertain Castleton this afternoon. The Spartans fell to Manhattanville 3-2 yesterday. Norwich has travelled on down I-95 to the Ice Casino and face the Valiants in an early season test of potential NEHC contenders.
