An outsider view from someone who was at the rink. Quinnipiac seems to almost be playing pond hockey while trying to find the combinations that work. The talent on the team is obvious, but the team has yet to become a "team". The upper classmen are trying to do too much. Need to shoot more on the PP as well. I think the Assistant Coaching transition may also be a wildcard in Q's progress, Cashman was a huge loss. Props to the UMass goalie for keeping them in the game. This being my first live game this year, I hope the constant minor penalty trend abates. At one point Carvel yelled, "You are ruining the game!" at the refs. Happy to see hockey again, good luck the rest of the way.

I feel like it's this way every year -- they always call the game absurdly tight in October and November, then ease up as we go.

For me, worse than the penalty calls was the awful positioning by the refs. Can't count how many times the refs got in the way of the play, or the number of times I saw linesmen racing to their spots because they had (for some reason) skated out of position and were late coming back to the blue line. Penalty calls early in the season, that'll abate as we go. But if the refs can't even properly position themselves, then we have an even larger problem on our hands.

All valid points. I believe that the team hasn't gelled yet... some guys are still trying to get comfortable while others are trying too hard. I'm sure they'll settle down and maybe having this coming weekend off followed by that long road trip to the north country will be just what the doctor ordered.

First time I see Q play this year. I was very impressed with all the individual talent in your team. Once it all comes together, you'll be hard to beat.

Good stuff - glad you're writing a blog.

I kind of like having Shiplo play on second unit as he can be a utility man and play D if it comes back the other way in transition.

Shiplo and Rafferty saw a lot of PP time last night and both looked really good. I think Rafferty will become a stud D-man, and he's not afraid to jump up offensively either. Shiplo proved last year that he can play with the best of 'em.

To be honest, the PP looked good last night compared to what it's been. They were getting shots off, albeit low chance ones. The problem seems to be one of finesse... looking for the perfect pass when a shot is warranted, etc. One too many, or one too few passes... stuff like that. Once they find a couple of cohesive units to put on the ice the PP will return and be more like what we expect it to be. To be honest, I'm more concerned with the mental mistakes they've been making as a whole.

On the other hand, maybe some early season struggles will help strengthen them for later in the season. Still no need to panic folks...
