      UMD 1 - MSU 0 after one. SOG UMD 11 - MSU 3.

Pretty much all 'Dogs on the ice but not so much on the scoreboard. (They scored in the last 2 minutes of the period).

Earlier UMD had a 2 on 1 that quickly turned into a 3 on 1 that looked like a slam dunk...that neither got slammed nor dunked.

MSU came close on a good opportunity on the only PP of the period.

UMD seems to have figured out MSU's defence from the early part of last night's game and this game, so far, looks like a continuation of last night's game in which the 'Dogs were getting stronger as the game wore on. Their aggressive forechecking was causing the Mav's all sorts of problems in today's first period.

Here we have a goaltender who is playing terrific for Minnesota State. 2-1 over UMD late in the 3rd period. Just under 4 minutes left...
At the outset, we could hang with the dude...

Looked like that could have been a penalty shot for UMD there...

              UMD 1 - MSU 2 Final. SOG UMD 40 - MSU 19.

Missed the first part of the 3rd and how things changed. MSU apparently tied it up early in the 3rd on a PP with the goal provided by Hinze.

They then pulled ahead on another PP goal...a blast from the point again by Hinze.

From what I saw of the 3rd period the 'Dogs seemed to lose the cohesion that was evident earlier in the game.

Stalder was hauled down late in the game on somewhat of a breakaway and it looked like Crowell was arguing for a penalty shot with the refs but to no avail. The following power play was exceedingly disorganized and resulted in MSU killing it off successfully.

Good on the Mav's but not so much on the 'Dogs.

Today was a day of surprises for Minnesota teams.

The Whitecaps took the 'Dogs over their collective knee today and doled out 5 - 2 shellacking.

A nice goal by Brodt who broke in on the right wing all alone at full tilt then stopped in front on SAB to get her to commit then lifted a backhand shot over the pads for the goal.

Rooney was replaced a bit over halfway through the second period...don't know if that was the pre-game game plan to give Johnson some game time or if Rooney got the hook. She let in a really bad goal for the Whitecaps` second marker and her body language made it look like her head wasn`t in the game during the time that I was watching.

Johnson looked more energetic but let in an embarrassing goal as well. All told the `Dogs looked like they were all turkeyed out in the effectiveness column.

The saving grace, if there was one, was that they scored on the power play with one second left on the clock. Unfortunately, the scorekeeper had already pulled an Elvis and the final score was never accurately recorded.

Hopefully, this tune up will scrape some of the rust off as well as any lingering stigma from the loss to MSU just before the break.

UM 0 - UMD 1 after one on a goal from Mrazova. SOG UM 7 - UMD 12.

The 'Dogs not looking as hungry or focused as UM in the last half of the first period.

Some standing around going on in their end leaving UM with lots of time and space...if this continues the 'Dogs will pay.

Forgot to mention...a brilliant pad save by Rooney late in the period preserved the lead for UMD.

Rooney has looked very solid the couple times mn has challenged her. Dogs deffinetly look more focused gophers are not clicking. They are lucky to only be dowm 0-1 at the end of2

No change in the score after two. SOG UM 13 - UMD 28.

For most of the period UM's possession in the offensive zone dominated both in time and quality of puck control, yet the 'Dogs increased the SOG spread.

UMD had one power play opportunity but it was rather feeble and I think it was during this pp with 4:08 left on the clock that UM had a good scoring opportunity right on the doorstep that was thwarted by another nice pad save by Rooney.

UMD had a couple of nice opportunities that looked like goals but couldn't capitalize...and they created and sustained some decent pressure in the offensive zone late in the period.

Great third period. Once again I thought it was some weak play by Minnesota in the defensive zone to allow UMD the third goal. But it was a great play by UMD to convert.

Excellent job by UMD playing very aggressive when we had the goalie pulled to keep MN from getting set up.

Well played game UMD. Congrats on long time coming victory.

                            UM 2 - UMD 3 Final. SOG UM 30 - UMD 35.

Potomak tied it up in the third on a pp after a nice cross crease (sort of) feed while Healey was siting out a penalty which looked like a terrible call to me...she and Cameranesi just skated laterally into each other in front of the UMD net and their shoulders made contact and Cameranesi went down...at least from what I saw in the replay.

Stalder tied it up 23 seconds later with a quick release slap shot that she took awkwardly off balance (skating in from the point after the puck bounced out toward her after some anxious action in front) to take advantage of the split second window of opportunity during which a quarter of the net was open and beckoned. Love when you see moves that make it obvious that the player's head was in the game in an intense way and that they understand the importance of timing and execution and more importantly, act on it.

Then Pannek (who was creating some definite problems for UMD with her spurts of individual effort) tied it up after another long cross crease feed on another pp (with Healey sitting in the box again, although I missed that infraction) that got there before a horizontally lunging Rooney catapulted herself from the far side of the crease.

Then with 4.33 left in the game McGovern gave the 'Dogs the lead again with a nice wrist shot from inside the low face off circle.

Peters was pulled with 1:40 remaining in the game for the extra attacker after which the 'Dogs missed 2 open net opportunities from a distance which prolonged the stress.

Game was pretty quick and regardless of the win, not the best game by some UMD players...lots of pucks given away, errant passing, standing around etc. As I said before the break if they can consistently dial these sorts of things out of their performance it would move them up a couple of levels and make them very difficult to beat.

Good on UM for pulling even twice...I thought it was looking none too good for UMD from a psychological point of view when UM tied it up at 2-2.

So congrats to the 'Dogs on the win...beat UM today and yet lose to MSU in their last game before Christmas...go figure. I guess that's why they play the games instead of mailing them in.

                            Too much stress...gotta go rehydrate.

                              UM 3 - UMD 4 after two. SOG UM 26 - UMD 17 (a reversal of yesterday).

It's a humdinger at The Amsoil today.

The 'Dogs are looking a lot sharper than yesterday, crisper and more accurate passes with decent flow but their pp needs work.

Both McGovern in the first with a goal from an almost impossible angle which she shot high over Peters' shoulder and Brykaliuk in the second again with not much to shoot at with her backhander both bagged markers for UMD.

Brodt missed a wide open net about halfway through the second and Stalder on a great individual effort and persistent focus squeezed between the defender and Peters from the right wing and got Peters to commit to start cross crease and took advantage with a second effort after her first hit the post along the ice...which occurred immediately after a UMD penalty expired.

UMD needs to stay out of the box...too many penalties to give a team like UM needless opportunities.

UM after jumping out in front 1-0 then finding themselves behind on the score board keep battling back.

                              It's a good one.

I think both teams played better today but MN still made way too many sloppy turnovers.
Dogs had two highlight reel goals in that game. Stalder on a break & the D gave her the whole left side of the net, Peters went down & Stalder just stood there waiting. the left side opened up & shot pushed the puck in. A very heady play. #13 had a picture perfect goal also.
