      D. None of the Above (I get my blood drawn a few times a year, and I have no problem watching the needle go in, or the draw itself)

It boils down to a calculated risk for me:

      1. I've never had the flu. A bad case of acute bronchitis once or twice, but never the flu.

      2. The flu vax is an educated guess at best. The 60% average increase in immunity applies only to healthy adults. So, the vaccine is most effective in that healthy adult group - the group at lowest risk to begin with. While it's a good idea to hedge your bets and get it if you're pediatric, geriatric, or work in healthcare, it's still not going to be as effective in patients with naturally weaker immune systems.

      3. Not an anti-vaxxer, but several years ago before I went off to Houghton, I had the bacterial meningitis vaccine. About a week later, I was hospitalized for meningitis-like symptoms that stemmed from encephalitis. After dozens of tests, the evidence seemed to point to a bad reaction to that vaccine. Having never had the flu, and not being in a high-risk group for contracting it, I see no reason to risk any potential complications, despite what the CDC says about them being minimal.

Who knows? With all the airplane travel I do now, maybe this is my year of reckoning.

I learned something new this week. I asked Dr. Mrs. if she'd had her flu shot this year and she looked at me like I was Jack bursting through the door shouting "Honey, I'm home." Evidently her neurologist has cautioned her not to get flu shots because MS makes her susceptible to a cycle where the small amount of live vaccine starts her immune system chomping on her nerve sheaths (basically, my wife's body is attempting to strip her wires and turn her into a doorstop because, you know, God's incomprehensible mercy, love and grace).

im with you but now that I have a infant and father with cancer, I will be getting the flu shot to help protect them...I hate getting it because it never fails that I or my wife get sick shortly after getting the ****. This year it was my wife, although that is probably a bad combination of the shot and some mold issues at her work...

The last time I got a flu shot I had a nasty flu a week later. Only had it once since. I got it from my fiancee who had the flu a week after receiving a flu shot.

Coincidence? Probably. I just never get around to it, honestly. File me under the lazy category. I'm definitely no anti-vaxxer though.

              • Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

I am a bit busy for a long post but there are many good reasons to get the flu shot. Among the top, it protects vulnerable populations who are not able to get the shot (as shirtless mentioned and as Keplar's wife can attest). It prevents large scale outbreaks even when it is not a great "guess." At worst, it will provide modest protection against a strain of influenza. If it provides 40% protection...think of it as a Kevlar vest that covers 40% of your body. Still better than no vest at all.

There is also so much correlation, but not causation with illness. Most illness people associate with the "flu" are not influenza. Flu shot or no, you are very likely to get some sort of illness once fall or winter comes around ('round the time you get the vaccine) so it really takes a population outlook to get a realistic idea.

Healthcare systems with strict flu shot policies have significantly less influenza morbidity and mortality. I do not get the choice to wash my hands in and out of patient rooms and I do not believe I should have a choice (save medical reasons) to not get a flu shot.

Although there are some reactions associated with influenza vaccinations, there is strong evidence that getting the flu carries a greater risk of these complications (for example, guillian-barre syndrome).

Of course. Even when it happens within a reasonable incubation period.

Here are the 227. There was a time when I could have pointed to every one of them > 5.0 Mag in the northern hemisphere. Now I'll bet I can't even see most of them.

What a drag it is getting old.

They appear to have standardized spelling, but not pronunciation, leaving another generation stumped by Betelgeuse ("bay-tel-GUYS").

Surely you're joking. FEMA will move his stuff stone by stone taxpayers' expense. That's how kleptocracy works.
