Michael Phelps was at 9,000 or 11,000 kcal/day, I forget which, when training for the Olympics back in the day. He's likely at that same level again. There can be little doubt that people like these two are the exception when it comes to athletes at an elite level.

I seem to remember hearing of NFL players putting away as much as 20,000 kcal in a day.

And I thought I had to eat a lot at 3,000 a day. When I start ultra-marathon training, that will jump to 4-5,000, but that still pales in comparison.

Senior year at SCSU, my roommate was the center for the football team. He told me that he routinely ate 5500-6000 kcal per day in order to keep his weight up at 305. Yes, he had some fat to him, but that fat surrounding a huge base of muscle. He "blocked" me one time, sent me across the room even though I was of the mistaken impression that I had prepared myself for the hit. He tossed me like a ragdoll and I was around 290 at that time.

boy, I had terrible parents. We played outside without supervision every single day, and not even in the backyard. And very often, we went into the (gasp) woods by ourselves.

And played cowboys and Indians, and war and British Bulldog, and rode bikes without helmets, and walked to school by ourselves......

Uphill.... Both ways.
