“I’m very sorry I got pneumonia,” Clinton replied, letting out a hearty laugh. “I’m very glad that antibiotics took care of it. And that’s behind us now. I’ve met the standard that everybody running for president has met in terms of releasing information about my health.”

Make a ridiculous claim. Then demand the candidate disprove the claim. If the candidate accepts the challenge they've validated the claim. If the candidate refuses the challenge because it's all trumped-up idiocy, then they're ducking, thus validating the claim.

This is what the right has to fill the weeks up to the election with, because every time serious policy is discussed they lose.

Make a ridiculous claim. Then demand the candidate disprove the claim. If the candidate accepts the challenge they've validated the claim. If the candidate refuses the challenge because it's all trumped-up idiocy, then they're ducking, thus validating the claim.

This is what the right has to fill the weeks up to the election with, because every time serious policy is discussed they lose.

There are actually honourable people that will listen to and respect (or even accept) disproof. And then there's politicians...

On the other hand maybe Trump could take one to try to force her to? That would be some kinda fascinating. He meets the criteria for at least several mental disorders. I would love an expert opinion

The Shrinks' Guild (TM) told its members to stop diagnosing Trump as a clinical narcissist because it's unprofessional to diagnose somebody without first charging them. The other possibility, of course, is that it is f-cking obvious.

I remember in 2008 McCain had a team of doctors review like 1,000 pages of notes; he had four episodes of melanoma and there were questions about whether he might contract cancer again (8 years later, he hasn't).

It does raise an interesting question, as Woodrow Wilson had a stroke on October 2,1919 that left him virtually paralyzed on his left side; and it was kept secret from the American public until after he left the White House. I know standards today are different than they were back then, but under today's standards the Vice-President should have become acting President by October 4, 1919 or so.

There have been enough bizarre episodes from both candidates that indicate that, if the public indeed does have a right to be reassured about the mental and physical fitness of their next President, then the McCain example, or even better, an independent third-party team of specialists, "should" be allowed to examine the candidates and put them through a battery of tests. I do realize that could be problematical from a personal privacy viewpoint; maybe they could just release their findings in vague generalities? A two-page letter from the candidate's own personal physician is not all that reassuring....

I mean, recruits for the Armed Forces have to pass physical and psychiatric evaluation first; shouldn't the President as well?

I think the theory is we should not impose qualifications outside the Constitution since they could be abused to subvert the will of the people. Let's say for instance there was a mental health qualification, and a mental health professional concluded that Trump is mad as a March hare. The administration of the test and the publishing of the results might be Constitutional, but not excluding him from the ballot. The People ought to be given the opportunity to weigh the evidence and elect him anyway, if they decide that such a diagnosis is merely a partisan attempt to deny them their voice.

What if a (two?, three?) separate mental status evaluations deemed the person incompetent? You do realize such exams are used in competency hearings for aging adults regarding their care needs and financial dealings (e.g. assigning a fiduciary trustee).

For example:
I'd love to vote for Vermin Supreme because I think he's a pleasant faux nut-job.
However, I'd never actually vote for him until I had proof he wasn't medically actually a nut-job.

Teehee. Unfortunately someone can be completely nuts and pass that. No category for psyco/sociopath. ALtho Trump might have trouble following directions (altho he seems to be doing a great job of faking it reading teleprompters so who knows)
