  • The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

We've got the presidency and Congress, time we also did the states.

To kick it off, here's a special kind of fail.

Only 18 percent of Kansans are "very" or "somewhat satisfied" with Gov. Sam Brownback's (R) job performance, according to a poll from Fort Hays State University released Friday.

And yet they just re-elected him last year. So what's that say about the Kansas electorate?

I guess it says more about the KS Democratic party.

No, that'd be nice though. Give me a good reason for refugee status in Canada...

The oil and oil money is running out and our State Legislature is run by idiots who believe cutting the Government to the bone is the only solution. People here have gotten so used to that free check and no taxes they won't accept that changing.

And by cut to the bone I mean, very seriously, that UAA and UAF might not be around in 5 years.

                    or even municipalities?

There are very few, if any, Republicans in the town in which I live. Yet we still have a two-party system. The corrupt, crony-led Democrat faction that hands out favors to its friends and persecutes people they do not like (which led to a lawsuit against them, which they lost); and the centrist Democrat majority that recently co-opted the Republican ballot line to run a slate of reformist candidates (who are mostly unaffiliated nominal Democrats who are disgusted at how corrupt the official Democrats had become). The reformers won a resounding majority two years ago and are now running for re-election on an excellent track record, while the other group is still trying to win using the same factionalism that brought it down last time.

It is kind of funny in a way, as party labels mean next to nothing in municipal politics, at least for towns < 100,000 population.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

The good guys have the polling edge in the KY governor race (this would not be a pick-up, the sitting Gov is also a Democrat), but it's still anybody's ballgame with a sh-t ton of money being poured in by both sides. This is that weird race where the RNC pulled all the funding for their candidate despite polling showing a close race, then reversed and opened the sluice gate with just a couple weeks to go. All of which points to some sort of personal conflict / deal-making / extortion behind the scenes.

While it would be nice, it has no national significance as KY is solidly red against a national backdrop. I don't know much (read: anything) about Conway but presumably as a competitive red state Dem he's probably to the right of a blue state Republican.

The old joke is local politics is a fight between two principled parties whose sacred disagreement is which real estate developer is bribing them.

Small stakes politics is almost always spectacularly corrupt and party labels mean nothing. Even better, it is usually dominated by a few local families so it becomes the world's most boring multi-generational soap opera, only livened up by the occasional tryst, criminal investigation, or if you're really lucky, murder.
